Chronicle: On the issue of Duels Challenged and Refused

Good Denizens of the castle,

In obedience to the will of the Court Chronicler Angron, and with the humblest hopes to only prove of assistance to the esteemed denizens of Marrach, I herewith scribe intent to keep an ongoing chronology of all duels challenged and thusly refused, the parties involved and any other information relevant as such.

There have been on two separate occasions witnessed by myself and others, events in which a ser or sera has offended the honor of another and when duly challenged, deferred the challenge most dishonorably only to continue with insults and/or attacks.

In accordance with the Code Duello,”Duels are fought to express, protect and restore one's honor, the honor of someone one feels bound to protect, or (unofficially) to build a reputation as a duelist. A duel is possible when there has been an insult or a slight to someone's honor. Any word, action, intention, or gesture, which injures the self-esteem, sensibility, or reputation of another, is for this person an affront”. When one feels their character has been duly offended, then one may exercise the right of challenge. It is then up to the challenged party to either nobly accept the duel himself (or find a duelist for such a purpose), or retract thy offending action or statement as is perceived by the challenger. This is the way of honor as scribed in the Code Duello.

If a party is thusly offended and the challenge denied, no repercussion is remedied for the offended party. Some slights are not deemed criminal as such and do not follow as being an arrestable offense. The matter of challenging affords the injured party ability to defend ones honor rightly as each deems fit in accordance with their subjectivity of it. As such, if an offender blatantly makes offense and then chooses not to duel or make remedy, he debases his merit as well as the honor of those noble denizens of the castle. As such, these people should be noted publicly so that others might duly take notice.

It is with this intent that I pen this missive. If ye have been so affected and wish to make public notice of the fact, I ask that ye send me a scroll and we will speak further of it. It will be most advantageous to have also any witnesses to the event, and the details of such. Junior Chronicler Ximena will review the scrolls with me, and we will post as always in truth and with impartiality.

In service of the Chronicler Angron,
Sorcha Du D’nan
