And it was under your nose all the time…
What truth? That Mulder and Scully really do exist? Well, sorry to disappoint you, but I mean articles and information on StoryTelling which is of interest to you.
The past few weeks I have been manually loading a portion of my company’s web site into a database – one file at a time – all 1,800 pages - all chock-full of useful information.
After almost a year of activity, I see the Skotos web site approaching similar proportions. Like surfing the net, one either has to know what they are looking for or one has to be search-savvy in order to find it. Problem is that many of you don’t know that you even want to read this information. How does one know one post will interest you over another? Which articles will give you that quick hit of info to help you improve my RP or help you to understand a Skotos game better?
Here are a few things I’d like to highlight to help you find all of this.
It’s in the Forums!
How many times have you seen that one? There are two things which will help you pick through the thousands of posts sitting out there.
First, the RATING and VIEWS columns will help you to see what players have rated as ‘grade A’ stuff to read. A thread that has a sky-high view number can be safely assumed to be a popular topic as well. Now that doesn’t mean that a thread that isn’t rated for doesn’t have a high view number isn’t terribly important. I myself consider all the postings in the StoryTeller forum as valuable information and yet this stuff is hardly viewed by anyone. Therefore…
Second, there is the SEARCH button. It is quietly sitting there at the top right corner of your screen, nestled between the Home and the FAQ buttons, patiently waiting for you. I have found the search utility to be extremely helpful to me. I strongly encourage you to utilize this feature. SEARCH is your friend.
Check out those Articles!
You know that NAV bar we see everyday…the one with the all important ‘Play Now’ choice on it. The one with that vital ‘Forums’ or ‘Discuss game-of-your-choice’ on it. Once again, nestled snugly between the Forums and the About Skotos choice is a most intriguing link to a section of Skotos.net entitled Articles. Here is a plethora of information on things of interest to all RP walks of life. Articles for players, builders, GMs, and more for players can be found here.
I’d like to bring your attention to a series of articles which will help you in your StoryTelling and role-playing. Click on the NAV bar ‘Articles’ link. Then scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the ‘StoryBuilder Articles’ link. Scroll not quite halfway down and you’ll see a bold line item with the text “The Elements of Good Storytelling Series... “ READ THESE ARTICLES! Okay, perhaps just me saying that isn’t much motivation, but there is information here for every level of StoryTeller from the StoryPlayer to the StoryPlotter to the StoryBuilder. So here are the articles…
The Elements of Good StoryTelling (http://www.skotos.net/articles/GoodStorytelling.html)
Creating Vivid Characters (http://www.skotos.net/articles/VividCharacters.html)
Writing Dynamic Settings (http://www.skotos.net/articles/DynamicSettings.html)
Plot Strategies (http://www.skotos.net/articles/PlotStrategies.html)
Imagining Backstory (http://www.skotos.net/articles/Backstory.html)
And now that I’ve posted this, I think I’m going to go peruse those again.
Happy StoryTelling!
