RPG: A game that involves playing a character in a non real or real environment.
I read in a Computer Magazine that people were sick of Tolkien RPG (thieves wizards magic.) So I would like to see everyone have their input on a non Tolkien RPG.

You mean an RPG that goes against the traditional? something new and unique that will shake the foundation of gameing as we know it!? Cant help you, I still like pac-man. (JK, I think that you will have plenty of help here, game geeks tend to hang here, but I think Lynn is right)

Now, I would play an RPG based on Pac-man! That would be cool! Does Atari still own the rights?

Ok, some of you are a little confused I guess you could say. I had this idea when I read an article in a magazine, this article stated that most people were getting tired of D&D type games. I agreed with them. What I would like you guys to do is to just give me some ideas for a non D&D type role playing game, (for pc, playstation, whatever,) just as long as there is no magic in it. You can still put in all the adventure, treasure seeking, just as long as there is no magic, dragons, wizards that cast spells or anything like that. Hope you catch my drift. So basically what I am asking is for you guys to come up with good ideas for a brand new, developed by you guys with your ideas, starting from the bottom and going all the way to the top. And basically the first question that I think would be good to start out with is what time period should this game start out in? Past, present, future. I mean just start giving ideas about your dream roleplaying game.

I still think an RPG where I have to find the Power Pill to turn the tide on those evil Ghostmonsters would rock. *shrug*

piter sighs.

piter says "Deus Ex. Fallout. Fallout 2. No one ever said Final Fantasy was a Tolkien rip off... Septerra Core. Thats a few recent ones off the top of my head."

piter adds "For the older among you, Sundog, Starflight, Twilight 2000, Space 1889, System Shock, Starblade..."

piter smirks "Sounds like a lazy journalist has taken a look at the remaindered pile at his local game store and decided from what was being left behind that all rpg's are Tolkien rip-offs, rather than Tolkien Rip-off RPG's don't sell like original ones (BG excepted)."

piter grins "Whatever happened to historical rpg's, on computer or paper?"

OOC- hint, look on the story teller pages...

Well, I have a great idea for an RPG, that I would love to help make, but I don't have the time, nor the patience to make it. (i.e. its a great idea for skotos or anyone else, but frankly, I'm entering college next year, and will have little time to be making a rpg.)

If you want you can contact me at Strider817@hotmail.com

Hows this for an RPG, anything that can ever happen anywhere. I know that doesnt help a lot, but it does... look at it. That includes StarWars rip offs and all sorts of curent and future things. Lets see... play an animal on a farm, hmm... that probobly wont fly... But you will! In an RPG about the ummm... lets call it the Royal Space Force, you command a ship or group of ships and play RP style on the ships as they go about doing ... things... You playing an engener? well get shutled down to the surface to fix a wether platform (under attack, just to make it fun) or board an abandoned space station as a member of the scaning crew, feel the terror as multiple life signs appear and start to converge on your location! Hide in a storage closset, holing your vibroblade tight as not to knock against the metal plateing. Sneek, fight, slink, and slither, your way past a blockade to get vital information to the comander of the bunker. Just about anything is doable, just be creative. and if you do this game, send me a copy.

Hay Hajon, I've been working on a few idea for the next round of proposals, and I'm interested in working with someone in developing them/reshaping them.

I've been working mostly with mecha (so I'm a gear head, SUE ME :P ) but I've got a couple other idea that I think would be quite interesting.

Email me at AngelTWB@aol.com or find me in game as lobo and well talk.

OK, Sorry I had to go to Southeast Alaska Tournament for basketball, I had to play in the pep band, it was all cool, hope to do it again soon.
Ladies and Gentlemen, theses are all good ideas. But, if we want to create something that is good, we need to start out at the very begging. And personally I think the best place to start is to basically what time period should the game take place: Example: " this game should take place in the future, but a great alien laser type thingy blew all the technologies, leaving all the people with no homes, no medicine, no clothes, they basically started out at the very very beggining." Ok, this is a good reply, even though all replies are excepted by me of course, but this is stuff that makes games. Idea, when, where, who, what, why,. I honestly don't know anyone who can make a game in one day, they get the idea in one day, then build on that idea. So that is what I think we should be looking for right now. When, and a good short or long reason or an idea for the time like the example.
MY REPLIES TO REPLIERS: %%For all to read%%
Atama: Pac-man, hmm, if you could give a little more we could look into that, instead of just "that would be cool". A power pill, maybe that could fit in somewhere, I see nothing wrong with it? Anybody have anything to say to that, I do.
Petedarby: If you have certain things that make you like to play those games but don't find them on all of those games, please tell us about them. I don't see a problem with making a pc game or a pp game (pencil paper)
we could make both if we wished. And no actually I just thought about what would come out if all the computer and video games were mixed together what would come out. But instead of already existing ones, we will make one from the most differential part of us, or brains.
Retribution: I'm with you man all the way. I am in highschool, junior, and I have a late night job and schoolwork and school soccer team. I'm with you on that. So I think that what we need to do then is make a game that you will do anything to do to play it then.
Kyle: hate to tell you this but I think that was already made, it's called TOON, based on all the cartoon shows of the old, you know, bugs ,daffy, mickey, all the characters. but something like that could be debatable. Any other ideas to throw in?
Lobo: If you would be interested please help, I could use all the help I can get to be quite honest especially if we get a lot of people. You got ideas, perfect lets hear them, one by one. What is mecha, ( I like mechwarrior and battletech myself to be honest). hey no problem with the talk thing just email me at fryerball@hotmail.com(anyone)
Hey guys, I just got to thinking. How should we attack this, should we all just throw out ideas, or should we be a little organized. think about that too.
MY OPINION: Now this is my opinion, doesn't mean any of you will like it, nor will I keep putting my ideas and needs only into this game, you guys might like others ideas, while vomit at others, perfectly fine with me. Oh, and if you want to talk about this with others, like if you support or dislike thier ideas, let them know, don't just restrict yourself to just me, fan out.
ok my idea. I think that the example that I gave is pretty good, if you read it that is.
umm, oh, and I think that we should stay a bit organized, just so that it flow a bit better than complete chaos.
OK, for the conclusion, just keep giving ideas about the game and when it should take place. Just keep the ideas coming, k, cool.

Ok, ok. Lemme think here...

Ok, the whole concept of Pac-man is the idea of the turn-around. See, the ghost-monsters, trapped in their little lair, are eager to find and devour Pac-man. So, they creep out, in their garishly bright colors, hunting down the poor Pac-man, who eagerly devours those little dots (I have no idea what they are called).

You must use skill, guile, and quick reflexes to avoid your hated foes, Inky, Blinky, Pinky, and their ringleader, the twisted Clyde. Until, finally, it is in sight... The Power Pellet! Quickly devouring it, you chase down your hated foes, who turn blue with fear at your might, and quickly gobble them up and spit out their eyeballs. Those eyeballs float back to their lair, where they slowly recuperate, and resurrected, emerge to hunt you again once your Power Pellet energy has faded.

Ok... In the concept of an RPG, say that the players are all Pac-men. You can have Pac-Stan, Pac-Dan, Pac-Bran, maybe even a Ms. Pac-man, Pac-Jan. Anyways, trapped in the corridors of a dark labyrinth, they wander, lost and confused, only knowing that they must collect (ok, lets have them be jewels) scattered along the corridors. When all the jewels are collected, a mystical door opens up to the next level of the labyrinth. They find food, such as cherries, apples, etc. on occasion to keep them alive.

The Power Pellets, when found, are treasured, for temporarily they give them the power to fight off their hunters, the Ghost Monsters.

You can also have the labyrinth inhabited by other occupants, oppressed by their Ghost Monster masters, and lying in wait of the Pac-men of legend, who will one day find the way out of the labyrinth and free all those trapped inside. And you can also put traps and puzzles for the party to overcome, and give them special skills to help them along the way.

I think a Pac-man RPG would rule!

Atama,

I think you diffinetly got something here, something real big.
Ok, you pretty much have no time period in which the game takes place, well actually no, you could live in the future, and then be digitized or something into this world where you have to free certain world leaders or something. I think that what you got here is really something that other people would like. I think though that people will not like the idea of being pac man maybe. But one thing for sure is, I WILL NOT PLAY A GAME WITH PINK, BLUE, WHITE, BROWN, RINKY DINKY WALL, I want some kick ass scenery, dungeons, I will want ropes, climbing, fighting without to eat hah "vanilla wafers"(that was a good one by the way). I want it to be puzzling also. I could see this as both a rpg and a pc game. Tell you what, you come up with some more stuff, and I think whoever has good ideas for you, I know I gave you some, this could be a really rpg. but ya gotta get some input, don't just put your ideas into it, cause then it becomes your game, not everyones game.

P.A.C.

Persons Against Control.

PAC is a term given by the Ghosts, the dark agents of an oppressive future... One in which humankind is controlled by semi-corporeal beings that are generated by a computer that seeks to use them as tools within a metal empire. These holographic images float down the dark mazes of the Labyrinth, seeking those who enter areas without proper autorization, or who are about when curfew is enforced. When they happen upon the PAC-men, the resistance, they chase them down and "Engulf" them, surrounding them with sub-sonic waves and subliminal holographic lights that basically lobotomize them. These failed PAC-men, the Engulfed, become mindless laborers for the rest of their lives. Only when the PAC-men can find the Power Pellets (small generators that control the projectors that create the Ghosts), and destroy them, can they then disrupt the Ghosts temporarily (until the projectors, which look like little eyes, return to the regenerating station).

The PAC-men wander the mazes searching for a way to release humankind from slavery, avoiding the Ghosts (called Ghost-Monsters by those that fear and hate them) and vowing to live free in a world where man can once again be the master of machines.

PAC-man, a dark future, where only wits, guts, and quick feet mean the difference between freedom and cerebral destruction. PAC-man, a world where machines use human beings as tools to serve them.

So, this better?

Most deffinetly, now if you could just give maybe a little more on both the ghosts and the Pac-Men. I think that there should be a whole bunch of adventure, puzzles that you have to solve, and fighting and stealth also.
If it is going to be a game based in the future, throw some cool future gadgets in with it for both the characters. But do not put the background and dungeons as small pink or blue blocks, put that in, and you will not have a whole lot of people wanting to play your game. Oh yeah, I think that we could turn this into a really good board game, a big board game, with plastic or metal figures, with foam or plastic wall and ghost and what not. We could make hexes on the map sheets that we would use to move the guys on. Think about that too.
P.S. Still looking for suggestions on the one cool RPG.

Ahh... pacman. A quote went around the net last week, something like this:

"Computer games influencing kids?! Of course they don't. When I was a kid we played pacman, and if computer games influenced us, we would all be dancing around in dark rooms filled with flashing lights, listening to repetitive electronic music and eating magic pills..."

But I don't think "Raver-kids" would make a particularly good RPG.

At first I though the idea of a PAC-Man RPG was just a joke. "How can it be roleplaying?" I thought. But wow, I'm surprised. A suggestion to add to this. Why do the players all have to be PAC-Men (or PAC-Women)? I'm not sure if this is a consideration for an internet game. But regardless, sometimes you want to be the villian.

Wait what am I saying. I want to be a Ghost. Those P.A.C. have been causing trouble and starting all types of mayhem. Why must they try and revolt from our wonderous system? It is the Ghosts who are the true heroes! Protectors of the glorious system ... All praise the system! (That was not a request by the way.)

Now this does seem a bit like Matrix, but hey it's amusing.

Atama
04-17-2001, 01:07 PM
It's a bit like Matrix meets the Terminator, but instead of wiping out humanity (like in the Terminator) they enslave them. And people aren't used as "batteries" like in the Matrix. Free will and independent thought is considered a privilege, not a right, bestowed on people that behave properly. Even the Master Computer recognizes that creativity is a useful thing, and creativity is something it lacks, so it does allow some in its human tools.

As far as playing a Ghost... Well, they are nothing more than the "eyes and hands" of the Master Computer. The only way playing one as a character might be possible is if a PAC-Man actually figured out how to control one of the projectors (perhaps through the Power Pellet interface?).

Toon? Never heard of it, but it sounds kinda cartoony... I dont think anything can ever cover the topic of 'something new' so... uh... dont try. Frankly your description kinda turned me off to it... Dont try to do a game like that. A game about being different? please... as soon as its out its no longer different from the other games because it becomes on of the other games.

On the other hand OLD topics are still going strong (and thats what im recomending because it takes a whole lot less brain power to think up new twists on old ideas that to creat new ideas) Like I said before with StarWars rip offs... Frankly I dont care... I love Starcraft and Robotech and lots of other space junky games... the point is, do a good job and it will be good, the more detail you pay the better the game. like uh... someone around here said "the game was ether gona be huge or deep, so out came the chainsaw"

As for the PAC man idea... Im kinda likeing it, kinda not... It should be fun but like I said, it depends on implementation. A good writer will make dull things seem interesting. So just because the general consept doesnt strike me doesnt mean the game wount... im not a big fantisy fan but I love CM... why is that? because its good. Ive seen a lot of space games that suck. Or games with good ideas but bad game... games with no ideas (or little) but come out great... X-com for one, the 'story', if you can call it that, was kinda lame and corny but the combat system was supurb! and disecting aliens was kinda fun too.

Some people might say the same thing about the Winter Watch in Castle Marrach. Doesn't stop people from playing them. It would just have to be clear to the player that they are not truly independent of the computer. They could not play a ghost who goes against what the system wants.

I just perfer as a player to have every option available to me. Probably is why I'm so addicted to this place.

Atama

Here's an idea...

The Master Computer allows free thought in its tools because creativity can be useful if controlled. Perhaps there are certain humans who have gained its "trust"... The Master Computer allows them to control certain Ghost systems because the best way to track down a human is to think like one... And who thinks better than a human than a human? These "Keylickers" (a derogatory term for any man who sucks up to a machine) are despised by regular humans in general, because they will sell out their fellow humans to gain acceptance by the Master Computer. Meanwhile, the PAC-Men hate Keylickers, sometimes more than the Master Computer itself.

This might satisfy the need to play the evil side. Since the Ghosts are remotely-controlled drones, you can't play one any more than you can RP a suit of armor or a laser gun.

Ok I like your post a lot. I will take it very seriously.

I think a great RPG would take place during the civil war. Now the basic premise would be that you move up the ranks and try to become a full general. You could start out in the cavalry, artillery, or regular army. All of the standard rpg rules apply. As you get exp. you move up in the ranks and have better abilities.

It gets a little more tricky when you talk about what types of things you could do like just shooting a yank or reb. In the war there were long periods of inactivity between battles. It would seem that you could do something in the game other than fight in a battle. I can't really think of what though.

Hey you could also be a spy or something like that. It would have to be a very deep game to be very good not just moving from battle to battle.

So many people love the civil war that a game like this would really do well.

I say make a modern day RPG. With banks, libraries, schools, daycare.... different towns and a city....
Think of it...
You could be :
An engineer
A jewler
A weapons dealer
An auto salesman
A cop
An FBI agent
A skater
A boxer
A wrestler
....
You could be ani thing in the game.... and yes this would take a long time to make... but in the end it would be cool....

Okay what about an rpg set in a time so far in the future that nothing is familiar at all (cue images of Tales of the Dying Earth by Jack Vance, and the New Sun series by Gene WOlfe). Mankind is in its twilight, and the main aim of most normal people in this world is just to get by before either a.) the sun goes supernova, b.) they are eaten by submen, c.) enlisted as slaves by the homo magnus or d.) die from old age. Now to give it a little backstory in order to make it interesting to roleplay in, let us say that there are attempts by homo magnus, and some homo sapien individuals to revive the power lost to humanity before the twilight phase (the lucky ones transcended or something... ). This is bringing about all sorts of wierd happenings throughout the land.
Players would be able to pick between submen, homo sapien, and homo magnus races, with advantages and disadvantages given to each one. Submen gain a lot of physical advantages and lose out on the intellectual ones, homo sapien gain a skill called spirit that enables them to survive and persevere very harsh conditions, plus a luck modifier, and homo magnus gain heightened intelligence and superior understanding of runes and such...no detrimental physical effects, but being one would be made harder by the tasks required of them...more puzzles to solve and that sort of thing.
Players will be made to socialise via the creation of Clans for submen, Guilds for homo sapien, and Societies/Leagues for homo magnus...(okay I m running out of steam here :o )
Umm...'magic' exists in the form of glyphs/equations (that actually could be based on some sort of formula or set of rules) and requires players to figure out patterns (minus the few they will be lucky to find in ancient manuscripts etc.) The goal in the game...as a stage could be the recovery of an item by a group, finding out something in particular about pre-twilight humanity (the autumn people), getting off world, etc. In a more long term game e.g. a persistent world, it would just be to find out as much as you can of the world around you...hmm maybe only one race, the homo magnus should be allowed...okay I am rambling...well there is the framework for an idea i hope.

If you are looking for something different, someone has probably made something close enough that you can adapt it.

Not completely original, but damn it would be fun. LO5R (Legend of the 5 rings) has created an incredibly deep and beautifully rich gameworld that's absolutely begging to be turned into a role-playing heavy Mud. The environment and theme is loosely based on a mishmash of historcal Asian culture and beliefs. It contains a strong and complex political system, unique combat and skill systems and yes, some magic (in the form of Shujengas) who are not all-powerful used more to aid and assist through connection to the elements than anything else - the emphasis on the honour of the Samuri class places them as lower class citizens in the court.

Perhaps anyone else more familiar with the setting could post more....

Okay....so you want a new RPG? Hmmm...

How about an RPG set during a real 'first contact'? You know...the day aliens show up over Washington to say hi?

It could be in the near future to allow technology not otherwise around today...

You could play both sides...or three if there is some 'evil' aliens chasing good aliens kinda thing going on...

You would have the whole world to wander about in...plus the addition of a moon base...mars base...asteroid settlements...space stations...maybe other worlds if you hitch a ride...who knows the possibilities are boundless!

You could start out as any number of careers...teacher gone nuts and learns to wield a bazooka, etc, etc...

Well...just an idea...

Here's another...

HEINLEIN WORLD...if you've read the books you know what i'm talking about! His main 'universe' has it's own history all built in...and if you take just the last books where they get into time travel...boy! It'd be fun!

One of the first text rpg games I ever played was game called "Nails" which called itself the "Best Damn Game on the Internet." It was basically a Dinky-MOO clone, probably really close off of the original, and it was based mostly in a surreal real world.

Anyway, a couple other under-used RPG-ish kind of games that would be cool to be made in a text RPG:

Traveller. Wandering, wandering, fight villian, wandering. And the best part is while it's Tokeianish RPG, it doesn't have to be.

7th Sea. Renaissance/Reformation alternative European history meets pirates, guns, and sword-fighting.

Anime-based. Yeah, it had a heyday in the early 90's, but there's not as many as it used to be. Besides, there's just something about whacking someone with a really big mallet.

A Caravan This one would really hard to pull off, but I think it would be cool to have a RPG set up where you are a merchants along a caravan heading to some uber-mecha religious shrine, and about every other day or so, you go through a city trying to sell your wears or buy a few trinkets in the end.

Swiss Family Robinson I would love to play as someone stranded on a lush desert island, but I don't wanna have to go through the Survivor-ish crap. Plus the man versus nature bit has always been a bit underrated in game-play.

ok it would be based in ancient asia... i don't know when exactly prolly during the dynasty wars they didn't have magic or anything so it works from there but here are some the classes:

1)Monk -unarmed fighter
2)samari -basic fighter(w/cooler weapons)
3)healer -like in TEC (NOT like w/spells)
4)ninja -stealth assassin/spy
5)tailor -again ripped from TEC :D

prolly more i can't thing of :)

Hmmm... Aside from the fact that Asia is a bit larger than the Island of Honshu you're mainly referring to...

I think Skotos has a game called Quingung in the works, that is aiming at that Asian/L5R flair.

There are things like Dark Matter, (Set in the real world with magic, but defiantely /not/tolkien rip-off, based on real world conspiriacy theorists), Vampire the Masquerade, Vampire the Dark Ages, hmmm, a few others. There are many by WOD that are quiet originial, indeed. I think some creative ideas might center around new worlds, unless you are looking for total revolutionary game play system ideas. I believe that more oriental type RPGs might be interesting, perhaps a few good ideas others could contribute. Cyberpunk is another, but still is D&D like. I think magic is the central part to any story, whatsoever. Though there are many without it, some type of mystical energy has been central to most world mythologies. That is why it finds perhaps itself in our new world mythologies. Being that this is a form of storytelling. Perhaps a "Senate"type RPG would be interesting, or Alternative Timelines.

"I think magic is the central part to any story, whatsoever."

Castle Marrach is a mixture of magic, contemporary ideas (medieval... though, there are some renaissance aspects), mystery and intrigue, and fantasy (faeries, dwarves, etc.). While contemporary ideas are strongly represented more publically, I think those involved in the magic system would say it is fairly prominent. As time goes on, more fantastical aspects begin to unfold, as well (with the Fae visitors). So I would not say magic is the central part of all stories.

"Perhaps a 'Senate' type RPG would be interesting..."

I believe TEC has a form of a senate. Not sure how accurate, though. I didn't play the game long enough to check it out. I have heard TECers mention it, though.

Magic has a big role to play in all stories, but I am going more to the depth of the mythologies of the world. It colors a story unlike many other spices, and allows it to become more interesting. Perhaps not a central role to all stories, I do know that iit is a big role to me in all stories. I do not know why, it simply draws me in.

Many things to consider in terms of magic and games. I won't go into too much detail as there is a wonderful article about magic here.

I will touch on when considering a new game, what are you calling magic?

Was the fairy godmother in Cinderella the true magic of the story, or was the love between a Prince and a girl who cleaned out the fireplace in a cottage the true magic.

Magic is the central part of any story, but perhaps not sorcery/wizardry/etc. A good poem or a good story is magic in itself.

If you go by magical arts such as sorcery having to be in any story, then romance novels, mysteries, sci fi, and any number of other style of writting couldn't exist.

The two ideas I have had (realizing that ideas are %1 and the hard work of designing and coding is 99% . . .)

Colonization -- with battle mechanics and skill similar to TEC, present characters with the opportunity to retake a historically human land from the monsters whihc drove humanity out centuries ago. Characters begin in a or one of several coastal outposts, with the opportunity to fight further inland. The appeal of this game would be the player's ability to establish frontier towns further inland and control the economics there. Frontier towns might also be overwhelmed by the hordes of monsters. Make the player economy necessary for the conquering of the inland in the production of weapons, armor, healing, limited and difficult magic, etc. The appeal would be a balance between the glory you and your little group of friends might gain through your efforts and the overall ability of humanity to reclaim this continent. The more you work individually, the more glory you claim. The more all players cooperate, the better humans do. Keep life tenous, and it could be challenging and fun.

Stocks--a game of two rhythms. Half the time is a stock market, with wealth being gained and lost in rapid pace. Develop an engine that allows players to manipulate the market *sometimes* but not always. Again, cooperation can help or kill you. The other half of the time is social, in the bars and offices and restaurants where deals are made or broken, items of prestige are bought and sold, people are hired and fired, loans are offered, debts collected, and knees broken, etc. Ring a bell globally to announce the beginning and ending of each trading period, say an hour on and an hour off.

I think the second might adapt to a text based game better than the first. The first would require some dynamic world coding and really intelligent mobs. The second would just need a capricious stock market engine or three. :)

I am off the point but I think they are not putting enough good RPGs out there. The ones they do seem to have been slapped together hap-hazardly. <shrug>

Making a role-playing game of my own has been a dream of mine for some time. I always try, but usually I either give up because of lack of time or ideas. Most recently I had finished a Dnd campaign and am getting ready to start a Werewolf one. I am a sucker for classic Dnd. I like the dark dungeons and mysterious waterfalls. An idea that crossed my mind for a game creation was a 'end of the world' scenario. Wether it be after a mass destruction world war or an attack from outside intelligence. Most of the worlds society is left to 'fend' for themselvs. Families find themselves searching in underground sewers and enormous piles of rubble for anything of value. Though many people are living like slaves there are the few who have an advantage. Gangs have uprisen and wars between the two of them rage constantly. Some are experts of thechnology and others savage hand-to-hand combatants. There are a select few who have enough money to keep a 'real' life going. In ruined cities, some buildings (ex. Skyscraper) are still intact and are inhabited by rich political or social figure. Wether it be a retired movie star or a the speaker of the house.

I just thought I would spill my ramblings onto the post to see what everyone thought.......
