You walk down the moderately steep slope to a forest shrouded in fog and dank humidity, to the west.

You arrive at a forest shrouded in fog and dank humidity. A mentalist of the boar is here. You see a forest shrouded in fog and dank humidity to the north and to the northeast; a forest with thick heavy foliage to the east and to the south; a blackened and grave timberland to the southeast; a woodlands with thick undergrowth up a steep incline to the southwest; a bunch of trees blanketed with the screeching of insects to the west; and a woodlands with thick undergrowth to the northwest.
You hear someone yelling from the north.
You hear someone yelling from the north.

If E=MC^2 (or, energy = mass * speed of light squared), then, if you can change the speed of light at a negligible mass/energy cost, and can do an easy mass-energy conversion, you can create matter or energy at no net cost.

shadow
03-24-2004, 08:27 AM
is E truly MC^2 ??

1. C is the speed of light
2. the speed of light is constant
3. the only variables is E and M
4. by this equation 2 items of the same mass will have the same energy
5. can you not have 1 item with more energy than another item of the same mass??

Blackhand
03-24-2004, 02:19 PM
4. by this equation 2 items of the same mass will have the same energy

No. What the equation means, if you can change a lump of mass into energy, that formula is the one for figuring out how much energy you will get from the conversion.

So two items of the same mass, if both converted to energy, will convert into the same amount of energy.

Of course, converting matter into energy isn't something that can be done easily and safely these days. ;) Though that's what happens in nuclear bombs and power plants - conversion of mass into energy, though inefficiently with lots of nasty waste products.

Oh, and the equation works in the reverse, too - if you can convert energy into matter.

2. the speed of light is constant

Is it? The nature of light is something still not fully understood by phsyicists. I do try to keep up with theory; even came up with a couple of my own, though I wouldn't be suprised if someone else came up with either of them long ago. I don't keep up that much. :p

You gaze about.
Sharp talons reach out of a grove of trees about a half-mile off to the southwest, marking the presence of Grendel's Shrine.A figure of a Giant can be seen far off to the northwest.

Sorry to put another one, but I've had this in my e-mail inbox for a while. I like it, tho it isn't THAT funny.

New kind of Terrorist?

At New York's Kennedy airport today an individual,
later discovered to be a public school teacher,
was arrested trying to board a flight while in
possession of a ruler, a protractor, a setsquare,
a slide rule, and a calculator.

At a morning press conference, Attorney general
John Ashcroft said he believes the man is a member
of the notorious Al-gebra movement. He is being
charged by the FBI with carrying weapons of math
instruction.

"Al-gebra is a fearsome cult," Ashcroft said.
"They desire average solutions by means and extremes,
and sometimes go off on tangents in a search of
absolute value. They use secret code names like
'x' and 'y' and refer to themselves as 'unknowns',
but we have determined they belong to a common
denominator of the axis of medieval with coordinates
in every country. As the Greek philanderer Isosceles
used to say, 'there are 3 sides to every triangle'."

When asked to comment on the arrest, President Bush
said, "If God had wanted us to have better weapons
of math instruction, He would have given us more
fingers and toes."

I watched The Royal Tenenbaums this morning.

Yanno, Royal is the name of the father. And Mordecai is the name of Richie's hawk. o.O

You see a small poster made from parchment. On the top is written: 'Wanted: Mordecai the Scarab! Dead or Alive! There is a crudely drawn picture on the poster; You see a small insect with a smooth black shell. She has long legs ending in polished claws, and glittering wings. She has green eyes, and when her mouth opens, you can see sharp teeth. She smells like rain and is constantly making a hissing sound. At the bottom are written the words, 'Reward: 8 gold.

The first one is not true, for milk comes from living creatures. :p

The second may not be true, for that egg could have come from whatever evolved into the chicken. Then again, that took everal eggs.

The last one may not be true, for the same basic reason as the last, that the child came from whatever evolved into humans, though that took several generations.

But, I just ruined your paradox. Sorry :o

Usually you can gauge the well-being of the game by which section of the forums is most active.

When people are bored, they suggest things in the discussion forum.

When people are enjoying themselves with other people in the game, but not nessecarily the game, they post in the noise forum.

When people are really involved in the game, they jabber in the IC forum.

When people start getting frustrated, they post in the mechanics forum.

Discussion and noise are the most active sections right now, but mechanics is getting a good bit of attention. IC is almost dead. Noise being active is just due to a bunch of attention-getters, and it's the same with discussion, to a much lesser degree, but discussion and noise are still the most active.

I guess that means that people are bored with the game but still hang around because of the people.

BARGHEST, BARGTJEST or BARGEST, the name given in the north of England, especially in Yorkshire, to a monstrous goblindog with huge teeth and claws, The spectre-hound under various names is familiar in folk-lore. The Demon of Tedworth, the Black Dog of Winchester and the Padfoot of Wakefield all shared the characteristics of the Barghest of York. In Wales its counterpart was Gwyllgi, the Dog of Darkness, a frightful apparition. of a mastiff with baleful breath and blazing red eyes. In Lancashire the spectre-hound is called Trash or Striker. In Cambridgeshire and on the Norfolk coast it is known as Shuck or Shock. In the Isle of Man it is styled Mauthe Doog. It is mentioned by Sir Walter Scott in The Lay of the Last Minstrel For he was speechless, ghastly, wan Like him of whom the Story ran Who spoke the spectre hound in Man.

A Welsh variant is the Cwn Annuis, or dogs of hell. The barghest was essentially a nocturnal spectre, and its appearance was regarded as a portent of death. Its Welsh form is confined to the sea-coast parishes, and on the Norfolk coast the creature is supposed to be amphibious, coming out of the sea by night and travelling about the lonely lanes. The derivation of the word barghest is disputed. Ghost in the north of England is pronounced guest, and the name is thought to be burh-ghesl, town-ghost. Others explain it as German Berg-geisl, mountain demon, or Bar-geist, bear-demon, in allusion to its alleged appearance at times as a bear. The barghest has a kinsman in the Rongeur dOs of Norman folklore. A. belief in the spectre-hound still lingers in the wild parts of the north country of England, and in Nidderdale, Yorkshire, nurses frighten children with its name.

When people start getting frustrated, they post in the mechanics forum.I suppose that's true for most people, but some people, myself included, post in the mechanics when they get involved enough in something to think up something worthwhile to tweak.

Whether it's fixing something that's broken or it's making what's there already more interesting.

Interesting analysis... but only applicable to some people's posting patterns, and those people don't necessarily represent the game as a whole.

Vogue, vogue, vogue
Vogue, vogue, vogue

Look around everywhere you turn is heartache
It's everywhere that you go (look around)
You try everything you can to escape
The pain of life that you know (life that you know)

When all else fails and you long to be
Something better than you are today
I know a place where you can get away
It's called a dance floor, and here's what it's for, so

[Chorus:]

Come on, vogue
Let your body move to the music (move to the music)
Hey, hey, hey
Come on, vogue
Let your body go with the flow (go with the flow)
You know you can do it

All you need is your own imagination
So use it that's what it's for (that's what it's for)
Go inside, for your finest inspiration
Your dreams will open the door (open up the door)

It makes no difference if you're black or white
If you're a boy or a girl
If the music's pumping it will give you new life
You're a superstar, yes, that's what you are, you know it

[chorus, substituting "groove" for "move"]

Beauty's where you find it
Not just where you bump and grind it
Soul is in the musical
That's where I feel so beautiful
Magical, life's a ball
So get up on the dance floor

[chorus]

Vogue, (Vogue)
Beauty's where you find it (move to the music)
Vogue, (Vogue)
Beauty's where you find it (go with the flow)

Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire
Ginger Rodgers, dance on air

They had style, they had grace
Rita Hayworth gave good face

Ladies with an attitude
Fellows that were in the mood
Don't just stand there, let's get to it
Strike a pose, there's nothing to it

Vogue, vogue

Oooh, you've got to
Let your body move to the music
Oooh, you've got to just
Let your body go with the flow
Oooh, you've got to

I was driving on the freeway in the fast lane
with a rabid wolverine in my underwear
when suddenly a guy behind me in the back seat
popped right up and cupped his hands across my eyes
I guessed, "Is it Uncle Frank or Cousin Louie?
Is it Bob or Joe or Walter?
Could it be Bill or Jim or Ed or Bernie or Steve?"
I probably would have kept on guessing
but about that time we crashed into the truck
And as I'm laying bleeding there on the asphalt
finally I recognize the face of my hibachi dealer
who takes off his prosthetic lips and tells me
Everything you know is wrong
Black is white, up is down and short is long
And everything you thought was just so important doesn't matter
Everything you know is wrong
Just forget the words and sing along
All you need to understand is
Everything you know is wrong

I was walkin' to the kitchen for some Golden Grahams
when I accidentally stepped into an alternate dimension
and soon I was abducted by some aliens from space
who kinda looked like Jamie Farr
They sucked out my internal organs
and they took some polaroids and said I was a darn good sport
and as a way of saying thank you
they offered to transport me back to any point in history that I would care to go
And so I had them send me back to last Thursday night
so I could pay my phone bill on time
Just then the floating disembodied head of Colonel Sanders started yelling

Everything you know is wrong
Black is white, up is down and short is long
And everything you thought was just so important doesn't matter
Everything you know is wrong
Just forget the words and sing along
All you need to understand is
Everything you know is wrong

I was just about to mail a letter to my evil twin
when I got a nasty papercut
and, well, to make a long story short
it got infected and I died
so now I'm up in heaven with St. Peter by the pearly gates
and it's obvious he doesn't like the Nehru jacket that I'm wearing
He tells me that they've got a dress code
Well, he lets me into heaven anyway
but I get the room next to the noisy ice machine
for all eternity
and every day he runs by screaming

Everything you know is wrong
Black is white, up is down and short is long
And everything you used to think was so important
Doesn't really matter anymore because the simple fact remains that
Everything you know is wrong
Just forget the words and sing along
All you need to understand is
Everything you know is wrong
Everything you know is wrong!

I'll be the devil's advocate for now then....

Ah, but you see...the days of worrying about communists is over. Communists are not the evil, like government propaganda has led you to believe. Keep this in mind: the goal of communism is to spread more communism. What has democracy been doing with other countries since...forever? Introducing democratic governments and capitalist economies. Don't get me wrong, I like the way America is...it's just a little too trigger-happy in my opinion.

Oh, sure, we've got terrorists to worry about now....but are they really a threat? True, 9/11 happened...and other bombings...but not enough of those things have happened, or quickly enough, to call it a war. Besides, right now, we're not fighting Terrorists, we're fighting Islamic governments...and there is a big difference.

Also, I might as well play devil's advocate a little more and point out another common insight: if guns and all the other weapons stuff did not exist in the first place, would we really need to worry? Oh sure, we might go back to the days of swords and shields...but I would personally prefer that over guns. The former can actually involve honor...not to mention actual physical skill and talent.

Random thought: Why should anybody care about whether or not Kerry has three purple hearts? Shouldn't it matter more how he plans to run the country? I think politics has reached a new low...and that it matters more who has better PR than who has the better ideals.

my son turned 1 year old today...why is it that before they are one...everyone refers to them as 8 months...why not zero? and now that he has completed this first year and is starting his second...should he be two? i mean...tomorrow he is officially in his second year of life right?

Emolis

Because....

If he was 0, you'd take offense if someone called him nothing. Wouldn't you? 0 is nothing. Therefore 0 is not existing.. it can't be zero.. they need something to measure by.

*waves hands in front of face* Ooooo spoooooky!

Remember this too, if those guns weren't made, if the warships weren't launced, if the rockets weren't fired, if young men and women weren't willing to give there lives for your ass, and everyone else in this county (assuming you live in the U.S.) some comie from some other county might come in, beat our ass up because we can't defend ourselfs and force you into a crappy little life that your less then happy with. We've got it good here, so many people fail to see that. Whats started is started you can not change that so protest won't do any good.

Okay, so this is a bit old but I just noticed it. I get so tired of hearing this sort of thing. Such sentiments indicate that the seed of fear has been planted into our hearts by our friendly neighborhood authoritarian government to defend its interests against any other authoritarian government and therefore increase its staying power. It's funny that the word "comie" is being tossed around as if it were still the Cold War, when in fact communism, just in itself, is no more malicious or harmful than the so-called representitive democrasies that are dominant. It really makes no difference in the realm of good and evil whether your rulers lean to the political left or right, for neither side is immune to the kind of totalitarianism we saw from Stalin, who of course is no longer a problem. But the funny this is people still confuse Stalinism with communism, which goes to show how potent the propaganda is, how they have accepted the seeds of fear which can only grow from the assumption that our relationship with those on the other side of the fence is adversarial. With this set in motion, there is no greater motivator to create more weapons, step up our defenses and fight their battles with our hands, spilling our blood so that one form of power can remain in place instead of another.

I didn't read the whole thing, but I'd just like to point out...that the goal of communism is to spread more communism.

So tell me...what is America doing with democracy right now? ;)

Democrasy tries to spread more democrasy just as communism tries to spread more communism and capitalism tries to spread more capitalism. You don't really need to spell it out because it's perfectly in line with my point. It's all about the conflicting interests of those in power who want to try to build a hegemony but can't do it unless the other alternative goverments fail. Are you going to become a pawn in another's ideological warfare?

Know what's funny?

Nation agrees with Idea: President Agrees.

Nation disagrees with Idea: President Disagrees.

Nation wants war:
Kerry: We'll give um war.
Bush: We will give, and win war.

Nation doesn't want war:
Kerry: War is evil.
Bush: Are boys are dying over there.

Yeah... odd. Maybe? I'm confused? Define.. describe.. relent.

There should be commas before "that's on eBay".

Confused me at first, even though I've seen that commercial a few times.

Random thought of the moment:
It's been a long while since I've seen TV.

No, just the one that hindered my understanding. While of course I would prefer grammatical correctness everywhere, I don't put up a fuss about mistakes that don't hinder understanding.

That is, unless I'm in some way responsible for the person's education.

I like simplicity in naming.
I really only associate two names with a particular person; whether those are character names, forum names, messenger names, account names, or real names, doesn't matter. Just two. Otherwise I have to sit there and think on who the person is.

I just use one name everywhere so it's simpler to identify me.
