Here's a question for you to ponder...
While I was preparing my holloween costume this morning, and waxing nostalgic over madrigal dinners of the past...it popped into my head that just maybe Skotos would like to hold a Castle Marrach celebration/event during Gen Con 2001?
Of course, if I'm gonna suggest it, I'd better be ready to volunteer to help organize it, so...I volunteer to help if you think it's worth pursuing even to see if it's feasible.
I was thinking that Cast Marrach would have been up and running for almost a year, would be pay-for-play just over six months, and that this would be cause for celebration. The Castle Marrach feast could be either IC or OOC. It could be similar to a madrigal dinner theme.
I could explore getting a banquet room say at someplace like Mader's which is within walking distance from the Midwest Convention center. It's not necessarily medieval, but it is old world...close enough for an atmospheric setting. Of couse, I would offer the Poets' Brotherhood to give entertainment. I could also look into getting a few of the madrigal singers at my college to perform a few songs, or we could whip up a madrigal singalong of toasting songs...just a few thoughts. All this would not be free, but then, what is in life nowadays.
Is this worth pondering further, or is this just plain silly?

If you guys go for this, give out the details, I could plan it with my vacation time for next year. I have been a gamer almost all my life, and I've never been to a Gen Con. This would just give me another excuse to go.

Fabulous! I'm looking forward to Gen Con next summer even more now if we can organize a Marrach event! Mader's is pretty good, if a bit spendy. And any of you who've never been to GenCon...it's still one of the best places to meet and play with old and new friends!

I'll X this. I think I even sent it in as a suggestion a while ago (but I might have forgotten to). It would add to the chance I make it to GenCon or Origins over the summer, and I'd even try to bring a reasonable duelists costume (assuming I can figure a way to transport a sword there).

Indeed, I have been working on setting up some sort of gathering for GenCon '01.. mostly just on my end though so i've talked to only a very limited number of people.
Anyone who wants to help on this, contact me and we can plan together. I'll leave my email below.
If figure we can get about 5 people to help organize it, it'll go smooth. As much as it would be fun ICly to do it, it would not really fit the game nor would it be fair to many others. So perhaps we can come as our character but all of it will be OOC interactions, nothing that will have any effect on the game.
Anywyas, thats all for now.

I have yet to go to Gen Con and always have wanted too. This would be absolutely fantastic thing to do and I do believe I put in the extra effort just to be there.
As for costumes... hmmm.... http://www.skotos.net/ubb/eek.gif
uhm.... I think I could represent Faer...
MY question would be this... all those CNPC's that are on Skotos.... would they have to bring extra costumes to represent the characters they play? http://www.skotos.net/ubb/wink.gif
Count me in... I will start putting the dollars away now to save up for the trip there!!! http://www.skotos.net/ubb/cool.gif

Good to see people are in on this!
I had hoped for some type of gathering sanctioned/sponsored by Skotos as a marketing tool we could all help with and benefit from, but we can do this on our own with Skotos' blessing as well.
Jess, I will email you. Hopefully you live in the Milwaukee area...otherwise I can do the legwork. Already checked into a banquet hall for fifty at Mader's, but I haven't talked dollars with them yet.
As for costumes, I am friends with the owner of Miller Armstrong Costumes...the largest costume provider in the Midwest. Conveniently located just minutes from downtown Milwaukee. I'll go out on a big sturdy limb and say I'll get a group discount for those that need to rent costumes. Again, I will work out those details with Jess.
Seeing as this was originally Jess' idea, I'll just be so bold as to finish with 'further information will be forthcoming after we get organized.'

As far as sanction and blessing, you have it http://www.skotos.net/ubb/wink.gif
Be aware that the harder issue for us is how much time Skotos staff will have to help and/or plan any event beyond a booth.
Our booth last summer had an enormous cost, first financially, but more importantly in time. It was worth it, but we had to call many favors from friends and family to help staff it. Next year will be worse as some of our staff *must* stay at the office to help support our games (by that time there should be several).
There are also three major conventions in a row next summer, Origins, Gencon, and WorldCon, putting more strain on our resources. Plus all of our staff deferred vacation plans these last two years and some plan to catch up with trips to Europe, family gatherings, etc.
We *will* have something at GenCon. It may be as big or bigger then it was last year. If it is bigger it probably will be in partnership with others, for instance, some of the folks that we are licensing titles from. Hopefully we can also draft some of the local members of our community at these various future convention sites to help out with booths and demos.
So we appreciate your efforts to plan a gathering -- keep us informed as things solidify, and we will do the same for you when our plans are ready (probably post-Christmas.)

For those of you who dont know what GenCon is (god forbid!), it's one of the largest and oldest gaming conventions around, starting from a small little get together at UW-Parkside in Kenosha, WI to the huge affair it is today. I myself have attended GenCon religiously since 1985, when it first moved to Milwaukee, and each year it gets bigger and better.
I was one of the lucky ones to have been able to talk to some of the Skotos crew at their booth this year, and my wife and I both got their great t-shirt (a picture of a huge sun with the words Why Yes. I am God. above it).
I think the idea of a Skotos get together is a great idea..especially since by that time some of the other Skotos games should be up and running as well as CM. It would give all of us players a chance to get to know each other.
To the Skotos team..if you really need some help with your booth next year, I would gladly give ya some of my time to help out..I think the idea of the players manning the booth is a great idea..and Im sure a good number of the other players who'll be attending would probably jump at the chance to help spread the word..

If I'm going to this thing, I'm gonna have to save up some cash anyways, so for me at least I'll have money for a nice restaraunt. As long as that place has some real, juicy meat along with the rabbit food. http://www.skotos.net/ubb/smile.gif

Christopher,
I will be at GenCon next year, naturally, and I'd be glad to help out at the booth, at least. I will have other commitments, of course, but I can at fill a seat and talk to people. It would be good to have your Skotos Seven members there, anyway, along with other newer game designers as they arise.

I attend GenCon every year, and although I cannot help run a booth (I'll be doing exactly that for Sovereign Press), I would like to be a part of some Skotos events at GenCon -- and would really like to meet in RL some of the people I've been playing with!

This sounds real cool. I would definately suggest making it a sort of IC, but, not counting for the game type of thing. And personally, it should be as much like Castle Marrach as possible. People come, wearing costumes (as close as possible to what their characters wear in the game), and introduce themselves as their characters. It doesn't need to count for the game, for people who can't come, but it would be interesting. Just my two cents. But it sounds so cool.

Heck, I've always wanted to go to GenCon too. Count me in, It'd be cool to see what everyone looks like. We'd need nametags or something though, just so we don't have to continually introduce ourselves.
As for costuming, all we guys really need are lots of white pants and brown tunics, and maybe a cloak of some kind...
