I have been thinking along similar (but different) lines. My approach was to enumerate what would maintain a primate's interest. I did a writeup awhile back in http://www.mxac.com.au/drt/NaturalEntertain.htm.
If you look at what keeps a primate's interest, you'll find some other stimuli that also play strongly in virtual worlds. Some stimuli that I didn't see mentioned in your article are: danger (slightly different than combat), something new, narcotics, food, some socialization (like alpha-(fe)male), and migration.
