Hi all,
We've received a few questions about the Honored Guest status recently given to a few members of Castle Marrach and been told that there were even more who had questions regarding it. Hopefully this message will answer those queries.
Fundamentally, Honored Guest status is an in-game rank, based upon in-game actions. The basic currency of the castle is influence, and that's what was used to determine who became Honored Guests. The founder of the Awakeners, Serista's first apprentice, the first Armsmen--those were the type of people who had won the influence to be named Honored Guests. It's all about making yourself known to the notables of Castle Marrach and gaining their Favour. (You can find some further discussion of this on page 6 of the Player's Guide.)
And the whole influence system is complex. Not all nobles nor all guilds are in favor with the court. For example, why were no prominent Remembers chosen to be Honored Guests other than Katherine, who is also the head of the Poet's Guild? It wasn't an accidental omission. The Inner Bailey isn't the end-all and be-all of Castle Marrach. It's a place where people who have made the right friends get to visit. Some characters may decide that making those friends is contrary to there other goals. Eventually, we hope to open up the catacombs under Castle Marrach. Only certain people will be privileged to visit those realms as well--and the people allowed into the Inner Bailey and the people allowed into the Catacombs will probably be very different groups of people.
We don't have our entire Favour/Influence system on line yet; when we do, it'll be easier for players to understand how much influence they've gained and with whom.
We know that there are many other players out there who have added a lot to the game without necessarily gaining influence with the right people. We know there are many players who have helped to drive plots or who have offered aid to new players. Though these actions don't necessarily garner you influence in the Castle, they do bring our thanks. We hope to offer OOC privileges to some of these players, through a special StoryGuide status, beginning next year.
