My game, FiranMUSH, prevents boredom by giving characters a lot to do. We do this by pregenerating all the characters with complete histories, backgrounds, and (most importantly) relationships with other characters.
Even in games where you get to create your own character, you can create role-playing opportunities by setting up relationships with other player characters. If you can get other people to work with you, try finding someone to play a relative or old friend, or even an enemy. Write some backstory to go with it, if necessary.
I think you'll find that creating relationships makes a game more fun by sharing the onus of creating interesting plots. The relationships begin to have a life of their own. Now you're angry because someone insulted your sister, and you didn't have to do anything.
