View Full Version : Curious about swords
Is it considered bad role play to stick a sword in a scabbard and the scabbard in a pouch?
This might seem like an obvious question but well I saw someone in that exact same situation. I didn't comment about it though as I couldn't remember if this was something that was discussed or not.
And I'm specifically talking about swords, not daggers or other smaller weapons, but those big long swords.

I would think so. Here is a part of the examination of my pouch that should clear it up. ;) "It's a small bag used for the carrying of small items, often worn hanging from a belt."

Yeah, I think that's not appropriate. On the other hand - I think most people make exceptions about putting practice swords in pouches. Personally, I think its a royal pain in the arse to deal with wearing multiple scabbards, even though my character has done that for a long time - though I finally just got annoyed and started leaving things in her room.

I'm guilty of sticking my scabbard in my pouch.. but when I want to go off duty or I'm doing something where it's really not convenient to wear a sword, I don't always have the option of trekking back to my room. And it gets tedious and interupts RP :(
Added Explanation: I am a little bit obsessive compulsive - I spend 20 minutes cleaning my characters' rooms everytime I log in, making sure everything is perfectly sorted into containers and tucked away so that the 'look here' description is nice and tidy.
Even my pouches and purses are compartmentalized.
So, I HATE having my character's hands filled with anything. I can't help it.. I need to stick it all in my pouch :p

For practice swords: a long case.
I'll put practice blades and such in my satchel. Avoided doing such with pouches.
Satchels are of more indeterminate dimension to me.
What of the 'dark pouches' which are theoretically semi-magical in nature? Is that explanation of them true?

As the owner of one of those 'Dark Pouches', why not ask me?

I've got one myself...
it was more of an OOC poking of people to think on what is IC reasonable to do with dark pouches and other storage containers :)
The parser allows us to do a lot of things 'technically' that we can choose not to do for RP/realism reasons.

Personally, I've always seen the dark pouches as akin to a DnD bag of holding. However, I think there was a staffer who clarified the issue on the boards a while back. I just can't remember what they said :p Might do a search and see what you can find.

Unfortunately, dark pouches have their limits, too. They just have a higher limit. Vidula does on a regular basis reach that limit, but many people do not.

Actualy it's a commong misunderstanding, but DnD bags of holding also have a limit. That's why it can be good to have more than one bag of holding.

For what it's worth, the dark pouches have no magical aura. There are some magical containers in the game that I've seen (mostly ones that spawn stuff and can't hold anything though), but the dark pouches aren't any of those.
From the looks of it, they were simply too big from the get-go and have been slowly phased out. Some people simply kept theirs for sentimental reasons, or because they like being able to lug a roomfull of furniture around in a pouch.

PS.
Like many things in CM, the exact dimensions of pouches aren't exactly defined last I looked. Meaning, an examine doesn't give me the exact dimensions. This does of course allow for some freedom of interpretation as to whether some larger items might sensibly fit into a pouch.
OOCly, the ability to lug around a ton of stuff without having to have it show up in our descriptions is of course a godsend. No argument there. But everyone should be responsible enough to figure out for themselves what fits into an average belt pouch.
Swords for example probably shouldn't sensibly fit into a pouch, no matter what the OOC code says. Neither should bookshelves, ladders, staves, canes, spears, chairs (not even folding ones) and the like.
In the end, however, it's everybody's own choice to do or don't. Just like it's my choice not to play with people.
Have a nice day.
