I'm using Netscape version 4.7 on Windows 95. I cannot type anything in the text box in the game java interface.

This is inhibiting my roleplaying.

Using IE4, I get a popup window error:

Line: 281
Char: 1
Error: Object doesn't support this property or method.
Code: 0

I get in the "chat" window:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You need Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer to use this page.

Which I'm USING!

Sigh. Have a good beta test folks. I cannot connect.

Right now the best client is Internet Explorer on a Windows PC. Version 5.0 and 5.5 work perfectly. On that platform we can use ActiveX, which though not cross-platform, seems to be much more reliable then Java.

For other platforms we have to use Netscape's Java (as Microsoft's Java is sub-standard). I'm surprised that Netscape 4.7 doesn't work, as it is fairly recent (most recent being 4.75).

Can you email ce@skotos.net with as to precise nature of the problem? Do you have a screen capture program that you could send us a copy of the screen?

As I do not yet have a start date (?) I cannot comment as to the Castle environment bugs, but I can say that today I have been getting errors entering the home page. At the end of the load, Netscape crashes outright sometimes, while Explorer gives one of those Explorer error messages. This doesn't happen every time, but it does happen, as recently as a few minutes ago.

I've tried the Marrach client in both IE 5.5 (Win98 SE) and Netscape 4.7x (MacOS) and haven't had problems. I know the client doesn't work "for me" in IE 5 (MacOS) whatsoever.

I'll give it a try under Win95 (running through Virtual PC 3.x in MacOS) and see if it's stable - for sheer curiosity. http://www.skotos.net/ubb/wink.gif

Okay, I've accessed the forum fine using Netscape. Perfect.

But using Internet Explorer on that very same computer its giving me the exact same error that Buggy has gotten in his main window. I didn't looks up the details, but its the same message I got when its trying to access the chat window.

Now, here's the kicker.

I tried it at home with IE using Win98 and then at work on IE using win 2000 and its the same error still.

Using Netscape off the exact same computer at work with win2000 seems fine though.

Go figure.

Lady, would you happen to know what version of IE you are dealing with on those two machines? I had assumed that IE4 was the trouble and was all prepared to install it on some unfortunate machine here to test things out, but on Windows 2000 it strikes me that you probably run a more recent IE?

Thanks,
Zell

Jeff, I -think- we just fixed this problem, though it is hard to know for certain since it cannot be easily repeated. Please do let us know if you continue to have problems.

Zell,

At work, I'm seeing the version as being:

5.00.2920.000

At home, I'm not quite sure. It would've been whatever came on the Win98 SE disk though. I haven't upgraded it at all, so that should be the same.

I was wandering around, and while trying to go up in the northern spiral staircase, I lost the text box at the bottom of my window, and it froze. I started over at this point.

I had the same problem, twice in two different locations. I noticed that when I finally "quit" the game the text box disappeared. Perhaps this action is getting triggered accidentally.

There is a spurious bug that is causing players to get harmlessly but annoyingly tossed out of the world -- the same kind of disconnect that 'quit' performs. The client closes the input window when this happens to show that any input would be lost.

Needless to say, fixing this bug is pretty high priority!

I am unable to examine, get, or otherwise manipulate objects that are in, on or otherwise proxxed to other things.

For example, I see a web with a spider in it, but I cannot examine or get the spider (You see no spider here). Similarly, in the practice room I see a bottle of wine on the table but I cannot examine or get it. Since we were given a quest that involved getting a spider and 'spirits', it was frustrating not to be able to get the few items that I could find.

In the pantry, I could see two tables. I could approach and examine the northern table, but not the southern one. It was odd.

I have had my fair share of 'freezes" where the text box leaves and no new text is recieved. I have noticed these generally seem to occur during heavy times (more then 5 people in a room talking and taking actions) and almost everytime I have accidentally submitted a second command before a first one has gone through. In the latter case, the text box does not always leave, but no new text is recieved.

Well, thanks to this weekend, I'll be able to eventually try it with IE and Netscape on Windows ME.

Of course, before I can do that, I'm going to have to completely reinstall all the software on my system.

HINT: Do not, under any circumstances, upgrade from 95 to ME. It will cause your system to lock up on startup. It will cause your drive to be unreadable. Do not do it. It is evil. (Thank Whomever that I had the foresight to back up all my writing and game design stuff before I "upgraded"). Upgrading from 98 to ME seems to work fine, though.

Okay, for what it's worth and the sake of beta testing, here are my experiences with the Castle Marrach client running on both Windows & MacOS:

Mac - Netscape 4.x works great http://www.skotos.net/ubb/biggrin.gif

Mac - IE 4.5 or 5x doesn't work at all http://www.skotos.net/ubb/mad.gif

Windows98 SE - IE 5x works great http://www.skotos.net/ubb/biggrin.gif

Windows98 SE - Netscape 4x works okay - just a bit slower/clunky http://www.skotos.net/ubb/smile.gif

Windows95 - IE 5x doesn't work - get's to client window and hangs http://www.skotos.net/ubb/confused.gif

Windows95 - Netscape 4x works fine http://www.skotos.net/ubb/biggrin.gif

Please note: the Windows95 experiences were run in Virtual PC 3 on MacOS (which has proven remarkably stable/usable), whereas the Win98 experiences were on a native Intel machine.

I've had no trouble with Win95 & IE5. Perhaps it's the VirtualPC that's buggy for you?

I've been going through this 'Must use Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer' bug all day.

Started out with IE 5.01 on Windows 98SE
-Didn't work

Used Windows Upgrade to install some IE controls (forget the exact name of the file)
-Didn't work

Installed Critical Service Pack
-Didn't work

Upgraded to IE 5.5
-Didn't work

Went to CNET, downloaded Macromedia and ActiveX flash controls
-Didn't work

Back at Windows Update I installed IE update
-still nothing http://www.skotos.net/ubb/frown.gif

Dunno what else to do... any suggestions?

I've solved it. When this happens (it happened again), I just need to quit and restart Netscape. I hope that this isn't permanent.

I don't know if I'm the only one, but the character set in the input line in my Java window has been messed up.

So if I try to type [say 'hello']
The input window displays something like [HH^ ^OOO^O]
And the enter key returns [What?] in the description window.

This was not a problem yesterday, nor was it a problem earlier today. It just suddenly occurred a few minutes ago.

I can only quit the window by closing it (quit looks like q^^O). logging back on does not help.

If it matters, I'm using Netscape 4.7 for the Mac OS.

BTW, Thanks for the fantastic job you've done so far. I'm really excited by this project.

It is Monday, October 2 at 9 PM Central Time. I logged on earlier around 7 PM Central and everything was fine. Now, a couple of hours later I can load Katherine, but all I can do is 'who,' 'look,' and 'examine.' Any other commands give me an out of array error. Either my character is toast or the whole system is down. Could someone post a message if it is? I assume that although the Castle isn't staffed on Mondays and Tuesdays that someone is monitoring for system problems. I can't even do an assist from within my room, so I have no idea.

There are people around on Mondays and Tuesdays, but turnaround on support is very slow on those days as the CE staff are on their 'weekend'.

Meanwhile, I've sent your problem to the programmers on duty to see if they can figure out what is wrong.

Thank you!

Actually your response was quicker than most companies I work with who boast 24 x 7 support.

I think there may still be a problem out there somewhere that is affecting certain commands...namely approach. But I am not certain that Katherine, her belongings, or her memory were adversely affected by this. I will check that out tonight.

So, I am assured that someone is looking into this. However, I trust that this is food for thought to prepare for that anticipated time when the Castle will have paying guests role playing their hearts out 24 x 7 and run into that elusive bug which requires quick attention.

After all, it never fails that that nasty system failure decides to rear its ugly head outside of normal business hours.

Greetings all!! Love the game, Haven't played a MUD type game in a while and have had great conversations, encounters, and even a rejection!! I have only been on for a few hours. Anyway, i tried to connect and got the uaually screen with messages but the input text box disappeared. Alas, I thought, I will not be able to play my character (Farin) so I will try to make another. Le sigh, that gave me the following error. It did not paste well sorry. I am using IE 5.5 and Win98.

I've been getting that "mystery quit" pretty much every day for the past week. Usually a couple times a day. I dont think it has to do with the number of people, I've had it happen with only 2 or 3 others in the room, nor one certain action.

It been getting better since I installed IE 5.5 however, so I'm not sure if its a program thing or a IE thing. I AM using AOL and a anti-timer program to keep it from booting me, and I've been wondering if this was causing this, but the timing of the drops now is causing me to think this isn't the issue.

Any ideas on what I sould do to try and keep this from happening?

For the record, I tried Netscape under Windows ME and I still couldn't type in the text box. It goes all grey.

I'll try IE under ME RSN.

How unfortunate. Hm. I don't think we have a Windows ME to test with, but I suppose we'll just have to buy a copy. Meanwhile... the IE route may be the better bet.

Do you at least get the login text in the output text box? If not, it might be firewall issues.

Interesting... I have windows 95 and Netscape 4.5 (i am slow to upgrade)at home and it runs fine except for i only see half of the map and compass on the right side of screen. I logged on a work today (oh boy, access to the internet at work now!) and I got a smaller text window but could see the whole map and compass. Have only had a few strange disconnect incidents. Things seem to work fairly well... even the lag isn't as bad as I've experienced on other Muds.. http://www.skotos.net/ubb/smile.gif
