A linefeed character is ASCII 10, not 12. (Unless you're talking about base 8, in which case a carriage return character is 15, not 13. :)

You're right, of course. This is a mistake I make at least once a year, because a) "line feed" starts with L so it really OUGHT to be control-L rather than control-J, which would make it 12 rather than 10; b) I was brought up in the days when octal ruled, and line feeds did indeed used to be 12; and c) I'm getting old.
Thanks for pointing it out. Gawd knows what mistakes you'll find when we get deeper into this series and it starts getting REALLY complicated!
