Last week we held a community development meeting to cover the magic and science systems. We're late on getting the summary written up but one discussion I do want to get started up is the discussion on plants.

What use will plants have? Well, for some spells and potions, you'll need to gather ingredients. Some ingredients you will be able to buy (such as in the apothecary shop we'll be opening up) and some will be found in the wild. We decided we need to have ingredients readily available in game before releasing spells that call for these ingredients.

There will be four categories of plants:

Plants that are found outside and that produce something, such as rose bushes that produce roses. These plants will not need to be watered as they grow in the wild. They will regrow their produce automatically after it has been picked.
Plants that are grown indoors and produce something, such as potted rose bushes that produce roses. They will need to be watered in order to live and in order to regrow their produce.
Plants that are found outside and produce nothing, such as plane trees. They don't need to be watered.
Plants that are grown indoors and produce nothing, such as potted trees. They don't need to be watered to keep alive. That would be annoying since there is really no reward for taking care of a plant that doesn't do anything.

What I'd like from you guys are plant submissions. Your submissions should have the following information:

Category 1 Plants (outside plants that grow)

Plant name.
Rarity of plant (1-10). Your ability to recognize plants will be based on you biology skill.
Brief, look, examine of the plant.
Object(s) the plant produces.
Brief, look, examine of produce.
The season the plant is in bloom.
The location the plant is found.
Any other information you want to include about the plant. Such as the effects of tasting, smelling, touching, or eating the plant or produce.

Category 2 Plants (inside plants that grow)

Plant name.
Rarity of plant (1-10). Your ability to recognize plants will be based on you biology skill.
Brief, look, examine of the plant in its 4 stages. The stages are: seed (if applicable), bud (if applicable), full grown, blooming.
Object(s) the plant produces.
Brief, look, examine of produce.
Any other information you want to include about the plant. Such as the effects of tasting, smelling, touching, or eating the plant or produce.

Category 3 Plants (outside plants that don't produce)

Plant name.
Rarity of plant (1-10). Your ability to recognize plants will be based on you biology skill.
Brief, look, examine of the plant.
The season the plant is in bloom.
The location the plant is found.
Any other information you want to include about the plant. Such as the effects of tasting, smelling, touching the plant.

Category 4 Plants (inside plants that don't produce)

Plant name.
Rarity of plant (1-10). Your ability to recognize plants will be based on you biology skill.
Brief, look, examine of the plant.
Any other information you want to include about the plant. Such as the effects of tasting, smelling, touching the plant.

If you want to submit ideas for objects to be sold in the apothecary shop, include this information:

Object name.
Object rarity (if applicable).
Brief, look, examine of object.
Any other info you want to include (such as taste, touch, smell, eat effects).

You can post your submissions in this thread or you can email them to me at lecter@lovecraftcountry.com. Storypoints will be awarded for any submissions that are used so be sure to write your character's name somewhere when you submit something.

Questions/comments/suggestions can be posted below.

Lecter,

You're including seasons when in bloom, fruiting, etc. And you're including items which don't produce anything (like plane trees). How much extra work would it be to have descriptions of plants that vary seasonally? For example, plane trees during winter would have a look/exa different than plane trees during summer.

I realize that this is outside of the scope of the request, but I'm just wondering if a) this would be a whole lot of extra work or b) if it's only a little extra work, maybe now's a good time to include it (rather than have to go back and do it all over again for every plant.)

Including seasonally varying plants certainly isn't a necessity, but it's a nice touch. :)

Go ahead and include it if you want but I can't guarantee that it will be implemented. Right now, I'm more concerned with getting the plants in place and the growth process started. I will look at seasons then and decide if it will be too difficult.
