Watch for more information and a release in the next few weeks.

Hello all-

Richard Wolfe here, I'm the creator of Space Empires. I'm looking forward to seeing Hegemony up and running here at Skotos, and actually playing in games again myself. When I was adminning the game at my own site, it was just too hard to play without cheating!

See you in game 1...

-Richard

My normal username (Phobos) has been grabbed by another !

Still, Nutrino works just as well - for those curious, it is a highly energetic charged particle that can run through just about anything.:D

Why don't you vet sorts explain the concept to someone who's never seen the game? I'd appreciate it lots. GE:S sorta attracted me, but I never stuck with it. (Couldn't tell my foot from my hand and my head from my butt ;p but that is nothing new).

I'd appreciate it :)

In reply to a brief explanation of Space Empires;

Space Empires is a multi-player web-based game. Players start off with one star (homestar) each, a certain number of ships and some finance. The game takes place on a galaxy of about 150 stars. Players can acquire factories to build more ships, and shields to protect the stars they occupy from spy probes, and death probes (unshielded a star can be destroyed by a death probe).

The playes send out their ships with the purpose of capturing stars which are either unoccupied, or held by their opponents. The game then progresses over a period of up to 4 weeks, and when completed the player with the most stars is declared the winner.

In order to win you will find it usefull to form alliances with other players, probe neighbouring stars to find suitable and worthy targets, launch death probes of your own, and improve the capabilities of your fleet by purchasing extra ship speed, battle power and ship range.

As the person at Skotos who 'discovered' Space Empires, there are a few additional factors that I'd to note.

Space Empires is a very elegant, simple yet sophisticated game. Yes, at its heart it is a strategic game of managing resources to grow and take over the galaxy, but the bottom line is that it is a game of diplomacy.

Everyone starts out equal, with the same capabilities. The simplicity of the game gives everyone roughly the same opportunity to win -- strategic genius helps, but anyone who is not strategic idiot has a chance to win. That is because where the real game play is, is in the diplomacy. If you fail at diplomacy, you'll loose the game. If you win at diplomacy, you'll survive, and maybe even win the game.

When we play tested it around Skotos, all of us who tried it found the game addictive. For the socializers among us the diplomacy and roleplay are fun. For the killers winning against real opponents is fun. For the achievers the high scores and stats are fun. For the explorers, wondering what was behind that next star, or what if I tweak my stats this way, is fun.

For the broader Skotos community, we also wanted a game that was episodic. Something where a group of the Legio on TEC or the Awakeners in Marrach could let off steam by saying "Let's get a gang together and go whomp on some alien butt". It is that social glue that will help Skotos grow.

A pure strategic game, or a more complex game, would not have fit into the Skotos community. By our nature, Skotos draws people who want to play games and socialize in some form with other people. Space Empires we feel fits very closely to this requirement.

Just to make sure that we are setting expectations correctly, GE: Hegemony is a very different game then GE: Succession. Hegemony is a strategic game where diplomacy plays an essential part. Succession was a diplomacy game that had some strategy elements.

We may someday revive GE: Succession -- I still think there were some good ideas there. But it will require a major re-design.
