Geez, it's amazing how much no shows can affect the balance of power --> points to game #8

We had the same occur in game 004, with five no-shows, but one of them woke up eventually!

The imbalance is real, but the effects of diplomatic agreements can overcome it, everyone wants a piece of that big "free" space ;)

In our game, several of us newbies overextended early leaving ourselves vulnerable to attack.

I totally agree that it's annoying, and I'm going to do what I can to combat it in the regular games. There's a post a week or so buried that discusses what I plan to do.

I'm just getting things like the Map Description Language out of the way first, so that I can keep creating interesting new games until there's a much larger map set.

To try and resolve the problem of no-shows in regular games I've put the first two of several fixes in place:

* You now have to verify your email address whenever you sign up for a regular game by checking a little box.

* First-time users (and in fact anyone who's never played in a rated game and isn't currently playing in a game) will be pointed toward a trial game as a suggestion.

Let me know if you see any funkiness in the signup process as a result.

More to come ...
