What happens to ships that are on their way to a star that has been death-probed?

If they won't overextend their range by doing so, why can't they fly back? Or why wouldn't they fly back immediately after receiving word? After all, if I can get the info immediately, they should be able to as well..

For the same reason we can't send them to a new destination once their like 5 minutes away from one of our stars I suppose 8)
