Forums Reversion

The cloud server that hosts the main Skotos web site and the forums experienced a hardware failure on Saturday morning that unfortunately led to severe database corruption. Several attempts to restore it failed.

This led us to our backups, but the timing was a bit unfortunate. Since the failure occurred on a weekend morning, we didn't see it until after a new backup occurred, which contained the corrupted data, and which removed our previous daily backup. This forced us to our weekly backup, which was unfortunately at the end of its time: six days old.

So, the forums are back, but we had a six-day reversion.

This should not have affects on the rest of the site, since the majority of our data is saved in our main-user-database or our games, all on remote machines.

  • Castle Marrach in 2020

    Hey everyone,

It's a new year for Castle Marrach, and we're cresting up on that time of year when people typically start returning from various breaks and we begin ramping up for the year's list of activities.

This is a big year for Castle Marrach, as by now everyone should be aware that we are splitting off from Skotos this year, along with Ironclaw Online and The Eternal City, while the remainder of Skotos' games are shutting down. I've been here in Castle Marrach personally since around 2004'ish and have played mostly uninterrupted since then, I've seen the game and community go through its fair share of changes and updates over the years, and this year is likely going to be the biggest series of updates for Castle Marrach we've seen. With that, let's go over this year's plans.

    Split from Skotos

I'll start off with the obvious big one here. Last summer Shannon announced that Skotos/CE will be shutting down, and closing down most of its games with it. The three more populated games, ourselves amongst them, are being sent off into the world to fend for ourselves. The original advertised date was "no later than March 2020" and the latest information I've gleaned suggests we'll be pushing all the way to that deadline before the split happens.

I'm in contact right now with a professional web designer who has agreed to update the Castle Marrach website from the old design it's had since conception in 2000. We're also currently in search of an artist to commission for new artworks for Castle Marrach both for its website as well as promotional content. We've looked through quite a few portfolios on deviant art and elsewhere but it seems a lot of the artists we've been looking into are too busy to take on projects right now. If you happen to know of any or see any artists up for commission whose styles you think would fit Castle Marrach, please let us know!

    The Triangle: The Last Chapter

Over the last few years we've been telling what has been the game's largest plot to date; the Current Awakenings' first and calamitous encounter with the dark magi of the Sortarian Triangle.

During this period we've released a significant amount of game lore and story, touching on the founding of the Triangle, its purpose and the background stories of the eight dark and powerful magi who make up it's council. We've revealed lore related to the origin of dragons, and Marrach's first encounter with two such beasts during the founding and construction of the Castle itself. We've learned further context to existing mysteries that have been lingering since far before this plot; the death's of Keterin, Perrin and Waldis, the identity and intentions of the Dream Guardian Nef, and perhaps most significantly, the nature of why we can't leave the Castle..

Due to the size and scope of this plot, it has so far been told broken into chapters, with one of these chapters being released each year since 2017. The year 2020 will see the fourth and final chapter of this plot, wrapping up loose ends and concluding stories that have been ongoing for years.

We've taken feedback on previous Chapters and are trying to find ways to better integrate the plot for non martially oriented characters and also ensuring that there are Staff supported activities to engage in in-between the big battle and/or exploration scenes. We do understand that the less sword-oriented characters want ways to help fend off this existential threat and feel more useful, we attempted to implement some remedies to this during the third chapter for this plot and though we made some progress I don't think we quite hit the nail on the head.

This year I'm hoping to implement the new @tasks system, which was tested out a bit during Yule Festival, to ensure that the non-martial characters have more ways to get their contributions in. This last Chapter of The Alchemist and the Shadow will include daily @tasks that the castle populace can band together to aid with, from reinforcing barricades, to mixing alchemical concotions for Orson, to patrolling the parapets for signs of threat and other activities. All of these will serve not only as prompts for roleplay during downtime, but will also allow the Realm's active defenders to requisition the Militia Quartermaster for goods that will further assist with the war effort.

The final chapter is shaping up to have two new areas to explore, one of which numbers over 100 rooms on its own. We're looking at running this chapter early in the year, and it's currently my top priority plot to get running ASAP. I don't want to announce a date until everything is fully built, coded and tested, but expect this to begin soon as the first staff-run plot of the year.

Intrigues, Smaller Plots and Conflicting Factions

Following the conclusion of the Triangle plot, we want to take the community back down the path of smaller stories and conflicts oriented around intrigues, politics and mysteries. Of late we've been pushing these on the side, certainly, though it feels that only players in certain positions (primarily those with close ties to Royals) are positioned to be aware of many of the intrigues and political based stories happening in the Inner.

Last Royal Court saw a number of significant political maneuvers as lines were drawn between two major factions in the Winter Court, and while the ever persistent threat of the Triangle has them playing nice for now, after the dust of the current threat settles we'll be looking to return to intrigues and politics as the main focus of our storytelling efforts. Plots moving forward will also be much smaller in scope than the four-year-long Triangle oriented plot but will also require far less staff resources to run and, as a result we'll be able to run more of them more regularly. Ideally I'd like to have some plot or other run on a monthly basis.

As an aide to pushing player run plots and conflicts, we're going to be making a concerted effort on Staff's side to provide Staff/VP supported factions for players to align with. For Outer Bailey players, the Cats and Rats as well as the Shadows both exist as supports for our criminal community, and I want to have a sit down and meet with players of criminal characters or those who might want to play criminal characters to see what we can do to help rebuild the 'law and crime' conflict of the Outer Bailey. In the Inner Bailey, we'll be looking to invite players looking to tell more risky and dangerous intrigues into the conflict of the Owls and Unicorns, both of which will have VP support.

I'd like to hear more from players moving forward on what kinds of things would serve as incentive to encourage them to dig in and initiate their own tales of intrigue and conflict, be it resources such as items or skills or just a more open line with Staff to corroborate and bounce ideas off.

    Seasons in Conflict

I'll go ahead and say it; our next major plot after the Triangle Plot is going to be the major seasonal conflict around which the overarching story of Castle Marrach revolves. This is something we originally looked at doing with the release of Freemium but didn't feel we were quite there yet. I don't want to speak too much on this OOCly, but this plot will ultimately serve to decide whether Winter really is eternal, and it will be the players and the sides they take which determine the answer to that question. I want to be very clear that there will be no predetermined winning side for this conflict, nor will it be a matter of 'good versus evil'. The actual plot for this will be some time off yet, but the intrigues discussed in the above section will revolve around getting us to this point story-wise.

    StoryPoint Changes

After we split from Skotos we'll be changing StoryPoint use. This is something we've wanted to touch for a long time but haven't really had authority or ability to, especially while sharing our micro-transaction system with several other games. A more lengthy, separate post will be needed to wholly go over our intentions in detail, but essentially the revisions to the StoryPoints system will have the following goals:

    1) To update the kinds of things that can be purchased via StoryPoints, including adding a variety of new options to the menu
    2) To review StoryPoint pricing and bring the price of directly purchased StoryPoints more in line with what I view as a reasonable dollar-to-point value
    3) To implement a system to allow for a degree of automation in StoryPoint purchases, intended to limit as much as practical the amount of time waiting for Staff approval, building or coding on requests
    4) To allow StoryPoints to be obtained, at a slow but continual pace, by players who actively log in and contribute roleplay to the community regularly. Different things we're looking at include a 'daily login reward' as well as the ability to convert unneeded Social Points into StoryPoints and/or a small StoryPoint bonus each day you reach your Social Point daily cap.

    Chargen Revisions

We've begun implementing some revisions to character creation for Castle Marrach. Right now we have coded a simple script which allows a new character to choose whether to start in the standard new guest room, an established guest room or to create a character to start in a Conclave guest room if they wish to follow that path. We're also looking at options to automate HG and Courtier start packages, but these things will have to wait until after we split from Skotos and get full control of the StoryPoints system.

    Plotters

We're looking to add as many as two or three new StoryPlotters to our team to help increase the output consistency of Staff run plots this year. Right now with our current Staff resources we really don't have enough members to handle VPs, the annual Major Plot and still have smaller regular plots running in between. If anyone is interested in running stories and plots for Castle Marrach, please contact me for further information.
