The Great Skotos Split Is Here [UPDATED]

The long-planned Skotos split is here. We are going to be separating Skotos into the four games that we're passing off to individual players (Marrach, TEC, the game formerly known as Ironclaw Online, the game formerly known as Lazarus Sleeping), and in the near future the core Skotos site will shutdown.

Here's how it will work:
* On Monday, we will turn off the ability to make any purchases through the main site. This will be the end of credit card purchases for Skotos games.
* We will run final automated credit card purchases on Tuesday morning. This is typical, in that our regular subscriptions are always set to run on the 1st through the 28th.
* On Wednesday, we will begin converting the games over to the new auth server that I've been working on for the last month and a half. All data will be converted over from the moment I grab the database. This means that all of your account information, including all payments (but not including any credit card information or Paypal information) will be duped to all the games: you'll be able to play any of them for the time you'd previously paid at the main Skotos site.
* We'll then start integrating the individual sites for each game with the new stand-alone setup.
* And likely I'll be resolving bugs in the auth server that only turn up through extensive usage.
* Meanwhile, we'll start handing off games to the individuals who will be running it in the future. I'm at this point over the time I'd initially committed to Skotos by a bit more than three weeks, but I'm expecting I'll need to offer support a little into May to make sure everyone is running well and that I've helped Christopher, Skotos, and the game leads deal with any intricacies of the hand-off.
* We'll request that all games remove all information from users who didn't stick with their game within a year.

I hope this will go as smoothly as possible. There will surely be bumps in the road. In particular, expect some random downtimes on Wednesday, when I convert over the games to the new servers, and expect the potential for problems on *next* Thursday, when I see how things work in the new setup.

A Few Updates as of 5/3:

1.) Castle Marrach, TEC, and Allegory of Empires are now split out from the main Skotos UserDB, which is the first (and biggest) step in separating these games. Multiversal Revelations will follow on Monday.

2.) Each site has a new login page of the form login.itsdomainname. This is the proper place to login to that game, and where you should access all UserDB functionality. Anything you do on the main Skotos users pages will no longer be reflected. Yes, that means you should be using the new pages to update your accounts, purchase months of play, and purchase subscriptions. Credit card payments are no longer possible, but Paypal is.

3.) Skotos is still running the games as of this moment, but they'll be transferred to the individual teams by this time next month.

4.) We've had some problems with credit cards continuing to run on the older UserDB system. We've refunded any bills that went through on the main system following the split, and apologize for the inconvenience. The plan is to turn the old UserDB off tomorrow, so that will absolutely stop the bills at this point. If you were accidentally billed, do note both that the amount was refunded the same day AND it isn't reflected on the new systems. [And as of Monday morning, those old charges seem to have been halted entirely.]

5.) We've discovered that about 20 accounts have credits of various amounts of them. This is a concept that is no longer supported in any meaningful way on the new UserDB, so we'll convert those credits to days of play at the most generous ratio.

Sexist? Sure I am. Men are crap and are the cause of all the worlds problems. They are the spawn of the devil and should be smothered at birth. I hate men.

Racist? No. I couldn't give a flying f*ck what the colour of someones skin is. Why the hell would I? Maybe a little. I think some of the rules of certain religions, such as Jehovas Witnesses, are not only ridiculous and laughable, but disgusting. But, this is my personal opinion. I wouldn't dream of insulting someone because of my views of it, so surely I can believe what I want?

Let's see, well you can't be refering to Ali, or so I assume since people see him as arabic not "black". Even though he's from a fictional land like every other character in the game ...

We've not see the Royal Wizard so you wouldn't know his skin color ...

What color was that babe in the chainmail thong?

There was that black royal guard ...

      the dusky courier ...

and of course the most obvious being Lady Nadira ...

Wait, isn't that more than one? It's at least two very powerful NPCs. Royal Wizard and Royal Priestess both having dark skin. And that is off the top of my head. It's well established as being a european setting so from that standpoint it strikes me odd they would be given such power. Especially the priestess.

Why it would almost make someone think the queen wasn't human ... wait I didn't go there did I?

That's right, everyone expect the strike from Master Quilp. He and the gnomes are going to protest with signs and march around (in a non-nazi way) talking about how diminuative races are protrayed in fantasy settings. Why do all dwarves need to be grumpy? Maybe Quilp would like to be a happy go lucky singing dwarf that doesn't work on swords. the gnomes want to take up basketball.

        "Bordering" on racism?

That thread bordered racism like South Dakota borders the Atlantic Ocean.

            Hindsight is 20/20.

Totally reasonable people have been making legitimate suggestions such as, "Hey, this X is a little inappropriate. Maybe we should do something about it?" for years. Just do a search. We have the, "WAA, rape is bad!" people, "WAA, jail is bad," people, "WAA, child porn is bad," people, "WAA, cliques are bad," people... and so on.

Things like racism never go away when the suggestion is don't make a big deal, don't talk about it. Deal with it silently, behind the scenes.

Agreed. Harsh, insulting, insensitive maybe...but not racist.

              Hilarious also, but not racist.

Man. I had to look up on a map to see if South Dakota bordered the Atlantic or not. *blush*

I dont know about NPCs but we have more than a few PCs of color. I know when I played john he has a swarthy color. Far from white.

Other dark-skinned characters I can remember (VP or not): Faer, Rogra, Elesin. Edouard and Nicolin Ramos also had dusky skin if I recall well.

Rikka (and her player, w00t!) is black. Though honestly I don't pay too much attention to race game wise. Though Rikka is big on her complexion. Anyone that knows Rikka knows she thinks she's all that and a bag of chips and a main part of that is because in a land of snow white maidens, she's one of the few that has dark (and in her thoughts of granduar, exotic) skin. There was a male character who I can't remember that thought Rikka was some sort of barbarian because where he came from the darker folk were the ones who were the warriors and were dangerous. I didn't think it was at -all- racist. I mean I didn't go "omg you can't say that cause it's racist and you're going against all dark skinned people blah blah blah". In typical Rikka fashion she said she was too pretty to be a barbarian and that they're too many pale faces around.

I don't think that -everyone- is racist. Or at least not intentionally so. I think everyone has their preconceptions of races from what you've seen on tv or heard, especially if you've never interacted with the race you have those notions about. I know I have some preconceptions that are probably not true and I don't mean any malice in those thoughts. There's a difference from being blantantly racist where you think the other race is inferior for this, that or the other and being misinformed about a race you haven't intereacted with.

That being said, as a minority (a double minority to boot!), even though a person may not mean to be offensive, someone is always going to take something a different way than what may been intended, someone is always going to be more sensitive than most and some situations can always be taken to home differently than whats intended. An example is that a pretty well known sterotype (probably more known in the south) is that all black people like watermelon, chicken and grits. Now some blacks can be up in arms about this, you make this reference and they'll swear you up and down. Me? Well I do like watermelon, chicken and grits (not all together mind you). So does a lot of people. It's no skin off my nose because those are foods I like to eat.

Now the thread with Thain's player I think it was going to far because that wasn't a discussion, it had devolved to personal attacks and snarky jabs that alientated a new player. It -was- disgraceful. People make notes that compared to other forums we're pretty tame. I like that. I'm glad that the mods are watching. I wouldn't dare want to be in a forum where personal attacks happened all the time or their were 15 other posters like Thomas (no offense) who jump on you as soon as you say something they may not agree with. What kind of community would their be if you jumped on someone's back as soon as they said something you don't like or agree with? We CAN have discussions and disagreements of opinion and heated debates. But a lot of time people lose their civility because it -is- the internet and think there shouldn't be any restrictions.

Call me a carebear, call me lame, but when we get to a point where the story host has to apologize for everyone else being blatantly insensitive to a sensitive subject such as race and culture, it reflects poorly on the community as a whole. When we have someone whining about whiners, well it gets kind of confusing. I think it's totally understandable that the thread was closed before the insensitive remarks became actual racists remarks.

So now I'm done being serious for the night. Flame on!

Consider racism as a sexual relationship. If it's open, honest and done in moderation between consenting parties, it can be very healthy. Certainly much more healthy than suppressed anger/frustration or even worse a taboo on the topic of race in general. It's when it comes to verbal or physical abuse of either party that it gets out of hand.

Besides, fiction is always based on stereotypes, simply because people think in stereotypes. Just by defining a character's looks and personality when you create them, you assign them to a specific category that already exists in your mind with which it will be associated until you decide to switch him/her to another.

If you find yourself truly offended by a fantasy game, it's probable that you have some other deep seated issues you need to resolve before returning to it, whether it be a crisis of faith, self-esteem or nationalism.

Nods to the above post , quite true.

Though consideration and an open ear to someone who does find something offensive , even if you dont agree or cant percieve things in the same light as them , may well be educational for both parties. Shame the Self rightous felt it needful to attack Thain instead of instead of explaining their disagreement , or asking how perhaps he/she would pursue creating a character that would be to him at least more palatable.
