  • Courtesy in a Nutshell: Entering and Leaving

    Dear Denizens,

Below you will find a simplified list of how one should handle entering and leaving a room and acknowledgements per rank, up to Honored Guest.

As with most societal rules, they are subject to change with the times, and any changes to protocol will be posted for general education.

    • You must show proper deference upon leaving a room.
    • If you are passing through, a polite, but unobtrusive acknowledgment should be given.
    • You should not make a scene of an entrance or exit without due cause.
    • You should ask your betters for leave if you have been in the same room for a time.
    • You should not ask for leave if such would cause interruption to the better.
    • You should give your deference to the "companion*", if available, of the better if the better is occupied.
    • You should not interrupt a conversation unless invited to join or it is open for discussion.
    • If at a social, you should pay reverence to those of greater rank and then everyone else.
    • When leaving a social, you should take your leave of the host as well as your betters.

    * A companion may be any personal servant or designated escort.
