Eighth day, Tenth Moon,
Eighteenth Year of the Recent Awakenings,

In accordance to the will of the Lord Chamberlain, and in upholding the duties charged to me as a Senior Chronicler, I hereby submit an account of
Rosila and the Mysterious Mask.

The story of Rosila, the woman whose story was told in part through the damaged book that appeared to awaken the Mysterious Mask, was revealed in full by the Mask in the afternoon hours of the eighth day of the Tenth Moon, before a crowd of more than fifteen people.

The tale the Mask told came from an old, worn book, and spoke of how the mask came to Rosila. She found it, in a chest, and its magic called to her. She stole it away, and the desires and joys of her life fell to the wayside, placed second and third and last to the mask, whose company she wished above all.

Eventually, she put the mask on her face, and it bonded there, and Rosila became the Mysterious Mask and wandered from town to town, feeding the mask its sustenance of emotion and knowledge as people came to play its game of questions.

The mask, a porcelain creation that appears sentient, is now on the face of a man named Lahderic, the Mysterious Mask. For the past week, he has echoed the steps of sera Rosila, coming through the halls, quizzing residents about their hopes and dreams, aspirations and failings.

As the week went on, his questions became more pointed, more theoretical -- first giving his partner in "the game" a positive theoretical example of their dreams come true. However, in the second part of his game, he would turn that dream into a nightmare.

The mask, of white porcelain, started off pristine, but by the seventh day was showing wear along the edges; cracks and crevices that showed the mask was degrading. Its magical surface, though -- one that showed multiple emotions -- remained unchanged, making those who looked closely at it uneasy and dizzy.

As the Mask told his tale, it was revealed the mask had degraded on the face of Rosila, too, showing the same signs of wear. As it did, her focus fractured, and in time she came to a chapel for help. There, an acolyte recognized the mask as a creation of a man banished from the town for witchcraft.

Hearing the woman beneath the mask beg for help, the acolyte took up a hammer and swung, praying it would break the mask and free the girl. It did; the mask fractured and fell away to vanish, freeing Rosila -- who had no memory of the years that she wore the mask.

At the end of the tale, the Mysterious Mask said it had no name, but it wished to take the one name he could remember from before -- Rosila. For the next while, it answered questions from the gathered, but as always, the Mask's answers left more questions in its wake than it did answered.

At the end of its tale, the Mask put its fate in the hands of the realm; would it be left to lie on the face of ser Lahderic? Would it be removed, or destroyed? Many viewpoints were shared, but the overall consensus was if there was saving to be done, an attempt should be made. However, it was Dame Eeva who guessed that the man behind the mask, a Lahderic, was indeed the mastermind and was playing a game with the realm.

When the Dame guessed his true purpose, Lahderic removed his mask and revealed the tale of sera Rosila was just that -- a tale. He had the two masks, one damaged from when he dropped it, he later explained to the Chroniclers. While the magic of the enchanted masks allowed him to place suggestions upon people, it could not fully force their wills, he explained.

He noted that he meant no harm, but instead hoped he had forced people to take a look within themselves and realize the truths they hide from themselves.

This chronicle will be subject to changes and corrections, as I humbly ask that the readers indicate to me through their discretion any falsehood I may have mistakenly communicated. It is by means of the conservation of the Past that we continue to serve Her Majesty and give substance to those that follow.

In service to Her Majesty Queen Vivienne, the Lord Chamberlain, the Chronicler's Office, and the Denizenry of our Gracious Queen's Realm;

sera Euphelia Noronos
Senior Chronicler
