Downtimes: June 24 - July 2nd

We've got another batch of shutdowns coming in late June and early July, so that the machines can be repaired for the newest bug, the ZombieLoad CPU bug.

In general, the Genesis games (Grendel, TEC, TEC-Test) all have reboots scheduled for the absolute middle of the night, so I'll be taking each down the previous evening at midnight and bringing them back up the next morning at 9am.

The SkotOS games have always been more robust about reboots, so we'll let them reboot on their own, though there's some chance for an ~2 hour data loss. In any case, I'll be checking them after the 2-hour window when I can, though Marrach has a middle-of-the-night reboot, so that'll be the next morning.

The UserDB and Web reboots will cause some downtime for the entire site, but again they will hopefully come up cleanly.

  • Chronicle - The Winter Watch

    Twenty-Ninth day, Eleventh Moon
    Year Four of the Recent Awakenings,
    And updated by the Office hence,

    In accordance to the will of the Lord Chamberlain, and in upholding the duties charged to us as Chroniclers, we hereby submit an account of the
    Winter Watch.

    The Winter Watch is one of the oldest organizations in Castle Marrach. It is a branch of the Chancery, its members is sworn to protect the denizens of the Her Majesty's Realm, while maintaining order. Members of the Winter Watch are soldiers and are bound by laws found in Her Majesty’s Capitulary. As of the fourteenth year of Recent Awakenings, the Winter Watch became the only law enforcement agency in the Keep, as the Royal Guard was disbanded and reformed into Her Majesty's own personal guard.

    The sponsor of the Winter Watch is the Winter Knight, His Excellency Lord Boreas. Within the Watch, as it is often called, there are deputies, Watchfolk, Armsfolk and the Corporal. While the Royal Provost, Sir Priam, oversees the Winter Watch, the Corporal manages the day-to-day duties and the execution of the Provost's orders within the Winter Watch. In the absence of a Corporal, the Provost leads the Watch. The Corporal could be recognized for his or her white-gold ermine pin.

    The Armsfolk oversee squads of Watchfolk. Watchmen and women report on arrests and crimes of note to their Armsperson. The Armsfolk then would sort out the normal day-to-day information and pass the important information on to the Corporal. Armsfolk had access to the pillories and to scourges, so that misdemeanor crimes could be punished quickly. Armsfolk could be recognized by their gold ermine pins and ash coloured uniforms.

    Watchfolk are the general soldiers of the Winter Watch. They could be recognized by their grey leather uniforms and silver ermine pins. They handled daily arrests and investigations for misdemeanor crimes and could arrest on high crimes. They reported to their Armsperson weekly, or sooner should the case merit attention.

    According to then-Watchwoman Devona, "it takes about two months for a deputy to be trained." Sometimes it takes a shorter period of time, such as former Watchman Kumaro, who was inducted after a month, and sometimes a longer period of time, such as former Armsman Vestio, who took several months to be inducted.

    For a time, the Winter Watch was disbanded, having been merged with the Office of the Gaol to form the Castle Sentry. This happened during the seventh year of Recent Awakenings. However, by the Twelfth Year of Recent Awakenings, the Castle Sentry was once again the Winter Watch and continued to perform the duties of the former Gaol.

    This chronicle will be subject to changes and corrections, as we humbly ask that readers indicate to us through their discretion any falsehood we may have mistakenly communicated. It is by means of the conservation of the Past that we continue to serve Her Majesty and give substance to those that follow.

    In service to Her Majesty Queen Vivienne, the Lord Chamberlain, the Chronicler's Office, and the Denizenry of our Gracious Queen's Realm;
