  • How To: Be Courteous in Courtship

    Penned on the 16th day, 4th moon, Year Twelve of the Recent Awakenings

    To the Denizenry of Her Majesty's Castle Marrach;

    In accordance to the will of the Lord Chamberlain, and in upholding the duties charged to me as a Junior Chronicler, I hereby submit an account of How To: Be Courteous in Courtship.

    Guildmistress Cordelia led this seminar in the Lecture Hall on the afternoon of the 11th day of the 4th moon. The Patron of the Courtesy Circle, Mistress Sinvy, was present. Other attendees included Master Heath, Watchman Falke, sers Kobe and Myrddin, seras Theresa, Myshella, Louise, and Auriela, and this humble chronicler.

    This lecture would cover the Basics of Courtship. Guildmistress Cordelia explained it was one in a series to come on How to be Courteous in Courtship.

    The Basics of Courtship Courtesy: [As copied from this nearby scroll]
    • You must suit or court within proper ranks; a rank above, below or equal to you.
    • You must maintain decorum at all times as per the general Courtesy rules.
    • You must not engage in behavior that would cause scandal or gossip.
    • You must adhere to the proper progression: friendship, suiting, courting, marriage
    • You may break from any level of involvement, but the further along, the more solemn.
    • You must allow a respectful amount of time between relationships should you break ties.
    • You should not suit, court or wed those you work with. This has potential for scandal.
    • You may press suit to multiple individuals. They must all be aware of this.

    What is the meaning of courtesy? ''Courtesy is respect due to ourselves, our fellows, our society, and our liege,'' answered Deputy Myshella. Guildmistress Cordelia agreed and added, ''To start with the Basics of Courtship, we must know a few rules that pertain to it.'' For instance, denizens must suit with those of proper rank in relation to themselves: one rank above or one rank below, to be more specific.

    What is the meaning of decorum? The accepted reply was ''The way one maintains oneself or the way one acts in public.'' It's also about respect, the Guildmistress said. ''You must never engage in behavior that would cause scandal or gossip,'' she instructed. Mistress Sinvy approached Guildmistress Cordelia and lifted her hand to her lips. ''Is this scandalous?'' she asked the attendees. Sera Theresa confirmed that it was, since not only should one breathe on the knuckles and not bring them to one's lips; but ''touching without permission'' is discourteous.

    Denizens are encouraged to adhere to the progression of courtship: Friendship, Suiting, Courting, and Marriage. ''You may break any level of involvement, but the further along the more solemn,'' Guildmistress Cordelia advised. This is typically longer than two days, but may be longer than two weeks. Guildmistress Cordelia discouraged suiting, courting or wedding those in the same work place. However, Mistress Sinvy confessed she has adjusted this stipulation, because of each place's individual requirements, as long as denizens avoid causing scandal.

    Mistress Sinvy noted that individuals may have multiple suitors at a time, ''without limit.'' Because of this fact, intimacy is discouraged at this stage. Suitors should be aware of each other, and informed when one is chosen by the suited.

    Guildmistress Cordelia thanked everyone, including Mistress Sinvy, for their attendance. In the coming weeks, the Courtesy Circle will go over the different steps of progression in Courtship Courtesy.
