ZEALOTRY Users: Critical Notice on Continued Use

Edit: Our new HTML5 client (Orchil) is now open for beta testing in The Eternal City. Feel free to try give it a whirl at

Edit: We have made great strides toward a new HTML5 client, which should offer a replacement to Zealotry. We're hoping to release that in the very near future, but in the meantime, using Pale Moon remains the best method for ensuring there is zero interruption to your game playing during the transition.

As of November 14, Mozilla will be auto-updating all copies of Mozilla Firefox to Mozilla 57, a new edition of their browser that will disable all legacy add-ons. This will probably include the majority of the plug-ins that you use on Mozilla, including the Skotos Zealotry plug-in.

This is a big problem for us because Zealotry is the most stable of our clients at this time, and the one that we believe is in the widest use. There's unfortunately no easy way to update it, because we'd have to rewrite it from practically scratch, using their new programming system.

There are tricks that you could use to to prevent Mozilla updates, but we don't particularly suggest them, as you want to have a clean, secure browser. Fortunately, there are two alternative browsers that will support Zealotry. Each of them branched off of an earlier version of Mozilla Firefox, and each of them continues to be updated for important security issues.

Pale Moon Browser

The Pale Moon browser is our suggested replacement. It is a totally separate browser that branched off of Firefox some years ago. It will continue to support the classic plug-ins.

To install it:
  • Install Pale Moon (Windows & UNIX only)
  • Install the Zealotry XPI on Pale Moon
  • Restart the Pale Moon Browser
  • Play on Pale Moon

The official version of Pale Moon only supports Windows and UNIX, but you can also get a slightly less official version of Pale Moon for the Mac. We've tested it out and it looks like it's clean and works correctly, but use your own level of caution in working with the Mac variant.

Mozilla Firefox ESR

An alternative for all users, but especially for Mac users, is Mozilla's extended-release version of Firefox that branched at Firefox 52. It's expected to remain supported until at least June 28, 2016, by which time Mozilla is planning to jump their ESR to a post-plugin phase. This is therefore a short-term solution, but one that should work for a while longer.

To install it:
The Big Picture

Our larger-scale goal is to introduce a new client that will be usable on any browser and make our games generally more accessible. We've had a HTML5 client in process since last year, but are currently hitting roadblocks that make a deployment before November 14 problematic. We've also just started a second project, which would be more specifically focused as a Zealotry replacement, without worries about new bells or new whistles. Both of these possibilities are being done out-of-house, by Skotos players, but they're receiving our highest level of attention for whatever support they need, as this is all our top priority.

So, consider this a short-term fix, but in the meantime if you use Zealotry, please download one of the alternative browsers and test them out ASAP.

  • Applying to join ICO Staff

    Hi guys,

If you're interested in joining the ICO staff team, I've included the application form below. Copy the text below, fill it out this form and email it to staff-at-ironclaw-dot-skotos-dot-net

What you get as a member of staff:
    - The satisfaction of helping to build a game
    - A variable amount of storypoints each month, up to 50, depending on staff activity
    - A more active voice in helping to plan the game
    - The thanks of our grateful playerbase

Application for the IronClaw Online (ICO) Development Team
The IronClaw Team currently consists of several devoted members. Each has their own area of experience. Some are coders, some are plotters and some are builders. While we do not accept applications for this type of staff, some staff are also guides. Each department requires a great amount of devotion to their area. They different sections must also learn to mesh together dependant upon the circumstances and desired outcome.

    Generalized definitions
A coder makes things "happen" in the world, such as a reaction to interaction with objects, skillsets, or other players. A plotter designs and plots the the storylines, such as quests for players, what happens if they do this, outcomes for different scenerios, starting points for players. A builder creates the world we live, such as what is seen, heard and read as you walk from room to room, the objects that exist here.

This world is a "team" effort and as such we regard it best to have team members willing and able to work together well. Nothing created belongs to only one staff member. Documentation is a must, we have several forms of documentation available for our use. This is to create a better working environment. We all what know what the other is working on and are better able to assist or make recommendations based on this.

The team is a group of "volunteers." There is no pressure to produce at high rates or to login more than you are capable but there is a certain level of devotion expected to remain a strong team member. A level of communication must be kept with your team members as much as possible. Being volunteers, we accept this duty without expectation of compensation. The reward is creating the game. Making a world which can be seen by outside players and relishing in their enjoyment of our creations and visions.

We hope to make this an enjoyable experience for the staff as well as the players. This is in the hope that team members will "want" to be here as much as possible and continue to expand the gaming environment. This does not necesarily mean that you will always be working on something you wish to but something the world may require but on the other hand, suggestions and opinions are always viewed with an open mind. You can make a difference here, we hope that all members of the team do.

    So, on to the application:

    Your name (real name)
Your Skotos account (can not be a trial)
Your email (the one which you prefer to be contacted through)
Your age with date of birth
You must be over the age of 18.
The length of time playing ICO (if applicable)
The characters you have played in ICO (if applicable)
Any past experience "working" in a non-Skotos game environment
Are you now or have you ever worked on an Skotos (S7) game?
    If yes, do you still?
If not, what were the reasons you stopped?
For what reason did you choose to apply to the IronClaw Team?
Have you had any disciplinary actions taken against you in any Skotos games?
This will not disqualify you as we believe people grow, but it must be made known to us for consideration.
What area of work would you prefer to be affiliated with? The areas are listed and explained below.
Include the specific area-related task required.
A builder is a creationist. They design the most obvious aspects of the world. The first interaction with IronClaw will be through the efforts of the builder. They must be able to write english and have impeccable grammar. It requires no technical experience.

If this is your choice, please attach a description of a room or object with your application. Set the era as late medieval or early renaissance.

A coder is the ultimate line to all inner systems of the game. Most of what they create isn't "seen" but is a hidden cause-and-affect. They are how the world gains its weather, magic, battle, skills, crafts, etc. They are not required to have a vivid or descriptive imagination (though it helps). They will work closely with the other departments.

If this is your choice, please send a list of all coding experience/education even if it does not directly relate to our programs, style of coding or game.

A plotter will control the flow of the game while it is running. They will urge players to get involved, they drop hints, start quests, create storylines. This is a position of tact and cunning. The team is not to push the players to a desired outcome but merely to get them moving and oversee the direction they take so the staff may compensate for their choices. The players are making their own history, you are the pivotal point upon which they make their choices.

If this is your choice, please send in a plot/quest idea which suits our current environment whether it be political, religious or likewise.

Guide positions are filled internally from existing plotters. We do not accept Guide applications.

Have you ever had a problem with another player/person in the past? How was this resolved?

Is there anyone you would not desire to work with? Why?

What do you feel is your best asset? Your worst?

At this time, we would like to take a moment and reassure you that this information will be kept private. We do not sell or distribute applications outside of the Ironclaw Online team, and all team members have signed Non Disclosure Agreements which protect your information. If you are accepted, you will be required to sign one also.

Send your applications to staff-at-ironclaw-dot-skotos-dot-net. This application is not an approval or rejection. It is the first step in the process of becoming a team member. If you do not hear back from us within 7 days from the date of delivery, please resubmit this application. Please wait the seven days before trying to contact us regarding your application. We require that time to look your application over and assess your skills and talents as well as your ability to fit in to our team. Failure to wait seven days before contacting us will result in a less than favorable reception to your application. This does not mean it will be rejected as we realize that you may be eager to begin, but it interrupts our ability to process your application. We know you're eager and we will get back to you as soon as we are capable.

    Thank you,
StoryHost Azrael & the Ironclaw Online Team
Mea squints at you, "For a magical nudist he sure is carrying lots of pie."

Hey there all. Just dusting this off over here to see if anyone out there is interested. While we are all (At least partially insofar as I'm concerned) capable of handling our given areas, the more people we have working on the game, the healthier the game will be, and the more amazingly awesome things we can introduce to the game world and the players.

So if you're interested, follow the instructions above and apply! All applications will be taken into consideration!
