ZEALOTRY Users: Critical Notice on Continued Use

Edit: We have made great strides toward a new HTML5 client, which should offer a replacement to Zealotry. We're hoping to release that in the very near future, but in the meantime, using Pale Moon remains the best method for ensuring there is zero interruption to your game playing during the transition.

As of November 14, Mozilla will be auto-updating all copies of Mozilla Firefox to Mozilla 57, a new edition of their browser that will disable all legacy add-ons. This will probably include the majority of the plug-ins that you use on Mozilla, including the Skotos Zealotry plug-in.

This is a big problem for us because Zealotry is the most stable of our clients at this time, and the one that we believe is in the widest use. There's unfortunately no easy way to update it, because we'd have to rewrite it from practically scratch, using their new programming system.

There are tricks that you could use to to prevent Mozilla updates, but we don't particularly suggest them, as you want to have a clean, secure browser. Fortunately, there are two alternative browsers that will support Zealotry. Each of them branched off of an earlier version of Mozilla Firefox, and each of them continues to be updated for important security issues.

Pale Moon Browser

The Pale Moon browser is our suggested replacement. It is a totally separate browser that branched off of Firefox some years ago. It will continue to support the classic plug-ins.

To install it:
  • Install Pale Moon (Windows & UNIX only)
  • Install the Zealotry XPI on Pale Moon
  • Restart the Pale Moon Browser
  • Play on Pale Moon

The official version of Pale Moon only supports Windows and UNIX, but you can also get a slightly less official version of Pale Moon for the Mac. We've tested it out and it looks like it's clean and works correctly, but use your own level of caution in working with the Mac variant.

If You Have Errors

Some users are experiencing "Content Encoding Errors" when using Pale Moon and Zealotry. As best we can tell, this is due to an incompatibility between Windows 8.1, Pale Moon, and Plugins. If you have this problem (or any other), we suggest instead using Mozilla's extended-release version of Firefox, which branched at Firefox 52. It's expected to remain supported until at least June 28, 2018, by which time Mozilla is planning to jump their ESR to a post-plugin phase. This is therefore a short-term solution, but we expect to have full release of our New HTML5 client well before that.

The Big Picture

Our larger-scale goal is to introduce a new client that will be usable on any browser and make our games generally more accessible. We've had a HTML5 client in process since last year, but are currently hitting roadblocks that make a deployment before November 14 problematic. We've also just started a second project, which would be more specifically focused as a Zealotry replacement, without worries about new bells or new whistles. Both of these possibilities are being done out-of-house, by Skotos players, but they're receiving our highest level of attention for whatever support they need, as this is all our top priority.

So, consider this a short-term fix, but in the meantime if you use Zealotry, please download one of the alternative browsers and test them out ASAP.

    After much hair pulling and keyboard pounding, we've finally released basic wounding and healing systems for your enjoyment.

    Wounds can only be applied via combat (or via plot depending on what a plotter feels is reasonable). @woundme does not work and we intend to disable it since we don't want to encourage self mutilation.

    To apply a bandage to a wound, you need a bandage and someone with the healer skill. The command is bandage bodypart with my bandage and the wound will heal at a faster rate than if it is not bandaged (the better the healer you have, the faster the heal time).

    Edit: Wounds are not visible to others if they are covered by clothing. But that does not mean that the wounds cannot be bandaged if they are covered.

      Update:

      Since only healers can apply bandages, and healers might not always be readily available, Eliza has been set up to provide minimal treatment to the wounded. Exhaustion makes her do a rather poor job so it is better to seek a more qualified (and conscious) person IG.

      To receive treatment, lay/lie/sit on bed in the infirmary.


      > sit on first bed
      You sit down on a hospital cot.

      Do you require treatment from Nurse Eliza?
      Type @YES or @NO to respond to this question.

      Nurse Eliza begins to look you over...


      If she is already busy treating someone, you will be asked to wait and she will tend to you when she is done (as long as you stay in the room).

        Update:

        Wounds cannot be targeted with "wound" or "injury" so as to keep them hidden if they covered by clothing. However, a wound detail was added that you can examine to take inventory of yours, or someone else's, wounds. If you are looking at your wounds, they all will be visible to you. If you are looking at another person's wounds, only those that are not covered are visible to you.

        In addition, looking/examining a person will let you know if they appear to be wounded (again, if all wounds are covered, they will appear to be uninjured).

          Do bandages cover the wound?
          So if someone is wounded but bandaged up, will the look indicate they are injured? Or should I do a look bandage to check?

            Rylana, yes, it should.

            For a detailed clarification, this is the way it currently works. When you get wounded, your chatter's 'wounds' property will be updated, so if you:

            > examine my wounds
            You examine your wounds.
            You note your bloodily gouged chest, your bruised pointed chin, your deeply cut left arm and your slightly cut right cheek.


            Assuming you are wearing clothing, anyone else examining you would see:

            > examine fidgit's wounds
            You examine StoryTinker Fidgit's wounds.
            You note his bruised pointed chin and his slightly cut right cheek.


            (the chest and arm wounds are hidden because Fidgit is wearing a shirt of some sort)

            None of those details can be targeted using the term wound, injury, cut or the like. This is to prevent people from discovering the extent of your injuries by trying to "> look Fidgit's wounds" and spotting things that are covered up.

            Now, if Fidgit were to examine his chest, he would see something like:

            > examine my chest
            You examine your bloodily gouged chest.
            A chest. It has been bloodily gouged. A patchwork collection of ragged finery covers it.


            When you let someone with first aid treat you, the wounds are bandaged. The bandages do not become a physical prop you are wearing, as they did in the past. This was a bit clunky and often required people to get completely undressed (generally for ooc purposes because their t-shirt was tucked into their pants, for example). Plus, for purposes of concealing your wounds, we don't want you to have a targetable bandage that people can find using OOC methods (> look fidgit's bandage and spotting the bandage on the chest even though he's wearing a layer of clothing over it).

            > exa my wound
            You examine your wounds.
            You note your bandaged chest, your bandaged pointed chin, your bandaged left arm and your bandaged right cheek.


            If someone is wounded, as Jekyll noted, their general look / examine description will contain a sentence "StoryTinker Fidgit appears to be injured." So, returning to Fidgit, if you examine him at any time after he gets a wound, you'll see that he's injured in his overall description. However, if Fidgit were to wear a face mask of some sort, covering his chin and cheek, that descriptor sentence indicating he's injured goes away. Likewise, if he's shirted and masked:

            > examine fidgit's wounds
            You examine StoryTinker Fidgit's wounds.
            StoryTinker Fidgit does not appear to be injured.


            As long as a person has a bandaged wound, regardless of how old the wound is (and whether it is fully healed or not), it will show up in your 'wounds' property and cause you to appear 'injured' in your look / examine. Because, really, if a person has a bandage on their right cheek, you're naturally going to assume they got hurt. Even if that hurt was from 3 months ago when they cut themselves shaving and it healed in 2 days.

            So if your wound is covered with a bandage and it no longer is a bloodily gouged chest but a bandaged chest, how do you know when it is healed? Someone with First Aid will have to tell you how long your wound is going to take to heal. Which is something still in progress.

            Perhaps what isn't entirely clear is how the coverage of wounds and other markings works. We'll demonstrate by example: StoryTinker Fidgit has gotten all four of his wounds bandaged and is speaking to Ruth Whitby...

            (from Ruth's perspective)
            > look Fidgit
            You look at StoryTinker Fidgit.
            StoryTinker Fidgit is a diminuitive, sprightly midgit of blah blah blah... StoryTinker Fidgit appears to be injured. He is carrying a whole lot of stuff. He is wearing even more stuff including a colander on his head.

            > l fidgit's wounds
            You look at StoryTinker Fidgit's wounds.
            You note his bandaged chin and his bandaged right cheek.

            >poke fidgit's chest "You had better have a good reason for this, mister.
            You poke StoryTinker Fidgit's chest, "You had better have a good reason for this, mister."


            Note, when Whitby interacts with the bandaged chest, she and everyone else in the room sees it just as a chest (because it is covered). However, Fidgit sees it as:

            Ruth Whitby pokes your bandaged chest, "You had better have a good reason for this, mister."

            > wince painedly
            You wince painedly.


            Is Fidgit wincing because of the guilt Whitby's trying to lay on him, or because she's driving her nail into his covered wound? This is a very good thing!
