  • A Harpy Grunt...

...stands alone near the entrance of the Shrine. It's black wings are covered in small green and gold feathers which seem to reflect and redirect the sun's light. As the harpy's wings flutter, they cause the light to dance about the floor in a mesmerizing display. A parchment with a symbol hangs from a rope around the harpy's neck. It is cawing a high pitched tone, repeatedly.

Walking closer, you realize three things. One, what you assumed were beautiful wings where just extremely dirty with flakes of gold dust and mana sand. Two, the symbol found on the parchment is nothing more than a dirty Sphinx paw print. And three, the harpy is not cawing, but rather saying one name, over and over...

    "Norin."

*The grunt has been standing, motionless for the better part of three days. If it was not for its constant cawing and the rhythmic rise and fall of it's wings, the casual observer would think it a statue. Its voice has become fainter now, but it will not stop. It knows that its master is near by and failure is not an option.

A noise coming from outside draws your attention to the entrance of the shrine. A small sphinx walks into the common area. It's fur is a dingy white yet sparkles in much the same way as the harpy's feathers. Inaudible mumblings stream from the creatures mouth. It seems deep in thought and does not notice you. The sphinx paces back and forth in front of the harpy several times, never taking its gaze from the floor. Finally, it stops and does a quick turn, gaze turning upward. Its eyes go wide and it springs from the floor to the harpy's shoulders and wraps around its neck, the sphinx's face barely and inch from the harpy's ear.

"YOU IDIOT!" the sphinx screams. The harpy, fearing further berating, does not dare to move. "Feldin tells the harpy to find Norin, he did, Feldin did. Feldin gives the sign to the harpy so that Norin can see the scratching, Feldin did! AND THIS IS WHAT IDIOT HARPY DO!?!?!?! HMMM??!?! IT IS!!!!"

With its last outburst, the sphinx dropped to the floor in front of the now trembling harpy. Rearing up on hind legs, the sphinx slaps at the harpy's chest with its dirty paw. The parchment flips over...

*The parchment is remarkably clean on the other side. The writing, barely readable as it is, appears to be made by a small hatchling, and the "ink" appears to be nothing more than a dried slurry. Squinting, you read the following...*

NORIN! FELDIN IS LOOKING FOR YOU, HE IS, FELDIN IS! FELDIN WENT TO THE PLACE YOU TOOK THE LONG SLEEP, YES YES, BUT NORIN WAS NOT THERE! FELDIN IS READY TO BUILD A NEW HOME FOR NORIN AND FELDIN, HE IS! FELDIN IS!!! TELL STUPID IDIOT DUMB HARPY WHERE NORIN IS!!!

*A muddy paw print adorns the bottom of the page*

[I enjoy these more than I probably should.]
        -Usuichii, Great Scientist.

Smarmy the Titan bellows to you, "You look almost like an Ugly."

Blackhand the Orc grumbles: I don't know what to call you. No ugly is that vile, and no proper creature of Uthgol has ever had such a lack of honor!

Climbing the stairs to the shrine you notice that for the first time in close to a week that the Harpy belonging to Feldin is no longer calling out incessantly. As you reach the threshold and glance to where the creature stood guard, you notice its body slumped on the floor, motionless. Frowning, you move closer to inspect...

Looking at the scene, your imagination takes over. The harpy has died, still upright, from exhaustion. As gravity takes over and it falls straight to the ground, its wings billow out a cloud of gold and mana from the impact. It happened near sundown, when the light shined through the open archways of the entrance, creating a mist of gold and green reflections as the harpy drew it's final breath...

You snap out of the poetic death scene your mind has created for the creature to see nothing more than a dirty harpy, lying crumbled, face down on the stone, its eyes wide open. It must have been so afraid of the Sphinx that it feared the creature more that death. You reach down, meaning to close its eyelids...

          "CHIMERA?"

Startled, you stifle a scream. The creature is dead! How is this possible?

          "CHIMERA!"

Your mind races with endless possibilites as you backing away. You shake your head violently as if to clear some unknown cobwebs from the far reaches of your mind. Their are no undead Harpies to your knowledge, at least, not until now.

          "CHIMERA. CHIMERA. CHIMERA. CHIMERA."

Suddenly, as you back across the room, you bump into something. You spin about, your mind in a tizzy, horrors of the unknown flash in front of your eyes. And then...you see it. A Harpy, covered head to toe in gold dust and mana flakes, that has a parchment hung from a rope around its neck.

Calming yourself, you read the new note.
