Downtime Report: Wednesday Night

We had an abrupt and unannounced downtime for all games and services starting sometime after 9pm PT on Wednesday evening. This was due to a massive power outage at our cloud computing facility of the sort that redundant systems are supposed to ensure never happen. After about an hour they were able to diagnose that the power was out. It took a few more hours for them to start restoring service.

At this moment, everything is back up except for Ironclaw and TEC. At the rate they're restoring things, I hope those will be back up in the next 15-30 minutes, but it's entirely in their hands.

As is typically the case with a sudden reboot, TEC and GR have to be rolled back. This is already done with GR. The TEC rollback should be just a few hours due to the more recent backups recently instituted, but I need to get the machine back before I can verify that.

Update: Ironclaw and TEC are now back too. The TEC rollback was 2.5 hours, from 9.30pm PT (when everything crashed) to 7.00 pm PT.

    One more attempt to get minor updates to the Skotos/TEC website....

    1. These pages do not have an immediately accessible "log in" link, which is a bit of a deterrent to new and returning players struck by the impetus to give Skotos money:

    2. Clicking on "player help" here http://www.skotos.net/games/eternal-city/ took me to a page that had significant lag to load (at least at the time I clicked on it.) I'm not sure if this is the experience of everyone else. Page that took a while to load is: http://www.skotos.net/help/

    3. When already "logged in" the "log in" link is hidden on several pages and requires few clicks around to find a "log out" first. For freebie accounts, this is, again, a minor deterrent for paying for a month.

    4. Could the "Play Now!" page have small screenshots added of what each of the clients look like, to give new players a brief peek at what TEC is like? http://www.skotos.net/games/eternal-city/playnow.phtml

    what pages need a log out link? Forums have it at the top, play now has it at the top, what other pages need one? serious question.

      Agree'd, trying to log out is not super intuitive, trying to play the game in freebie mode is actually challenging also, especially for newer players. It's easy to overlook stuff like this when you've been navigating the menu's for years.

      Also recommend putting orchil client on the play now screen, effectively the only client worth using now potentially using it as the "recommended" client. Newer players reporting issues with logging in, only 1 out of 5 clients works on your CPU, bit of a deterrent for someone trying to get into a game like this.

      Archimagi : log off button is easily missed on the play now screen IMO

        More specifically I believe it to be http://www.skotos.net/help/Intro.php with a TTFB of 30 seconds. Maybe some of that stuff should be split into other requests? So it looks like it's working.

        Also:
        Visit status.skotos.net to get the latest info on Skotos' hardware & network status, even if the site is down.
        Where do I check if status.skotos.net is timing out?

          Needs a modern look. I mean, Squarespace that goodness and call it a day with a little drag and drop.
