Forums Reversion

The cloud server that hosts the main Skotos web site and the forums experienced a hardware failure on Saturday morning that unfortunately led to severe database corruption. Several attempts to restore it failed.

This led us to our backups, but the timing was a bit unfortunate. Since the failure occurred on a weekend morning, we didn't see it until after a new backup occurred, which contained the corrupted data, and which removed our previous daily backup. This forced us to our weekly backup, which was unfortunately at the end of its time: six days old.

So, the forums are back, but we had a six-day reversion.

This should not have affects on the rest of the site, since the majority of our data is saved in our main-user-database or our games, all on remote machines.

Obviously fixing the lag/server is first and foremost in the GMs minds, but will there be any sort of compensation for the time we lost? Game was down for almost an entire day and has been consistently painful to play for over a month.

Compensation awards are usually handled after the situation has been fully resolved. Because more down time could happen, a revert could happen (wiping out the effort needed to make compensation happen while reversing the compensation itself), etc. So once a situation is fully resolved, staff discusses the options, comes to a consensus, and implements whatever was decided upon.

To be clear, we're still pushing backups to at least Saturday night to give us time to dig through and clean up some back end processes. Then we'll need to either wait for or trigger a backup to test weather or not those efforts were successful, etc. We'll know more then.

Thanks for the insight and transparency Tale. I swear I'm not being grumpy. You guys are doing great work. Just regurgitating some of the concerns I've seen from the discord. Hopefully you can get it all fixed soon.

It froze for ~7 mins and unfroze. This is the result of a process taking up all of the memory and then either finishing the task, cancelling it or leaving it in the background for later.

The game did suffer an actual crash (not just lagging out issues as we were experiencing previously). Skotos has restored the game to the backup from this morning, which was at 4 AM.

Sorry for any inconvenience this might have caused. As you can imagine, we are super thankful that the backups had been fixed and working properly again before this happened, or it could have been much more painful.
