ZEALOTRY Users: Critical Notice on Continued Use

Edit: Our new HTML5 client (Orchil) is now open for beta testing in The Eternal City and Grendel's Revenge. Feel free to try give it a whirl at http://test.skotos.net/orchil/

Edit: We have made great strides toward a new HTML5 client, which should offer a replacement to Zealotry. We're hoping to release that in the very near future, but in the meantime, using Pale Moon remains the best method for ensuring there is zero interruption to your game playing during the transition.

As of November 14, Mozilla will be auto-updating all copies of Mozilla Firefox to Mozilla 57, a new edition of their browser that will disable all legacy add-ons. This will probably include the majority of the plug-ins that you use on Mozilla, including the Skotos Zealotry plug-in.

This is a big problem for us because Zealotry is the most stable of our clients at this time, and the one that we believe is in the widest use. There's unfortunately no easy way to update it, because we'd have to rewrite it from practically scratch, using their new programming system.

There are tricks that you could use to to prevent Mozilla updates, but we don't particularly suggest them, as you want to have a clean, secure browser. Fortunately, there are two alternative browsers that will support Zealotry. Each of them branched off of an earlier version of Mozilla Firefox, and each of them continues to be updated for important security issues.

Pale Moon Browser

The Pale Moon browser is our suggested replacement. It is a totally separate browser that branched off of Firefox some years ago. It will continue to support the classic plug-ins.

To install it:
  • Install Pale Moon (Windows & UNIX only)
  • Install the Zealotry XPI on Pale Moon
  • Restart the Pale Moon Browser
  • Play on Pale Moon

The official version of Pale Moon only supports Windows and UNIX, but you can also get a slightly less official version of Pale Moon for the Mac. We've tested it out and it looks like it's clean and works correctly, but use your own level of caution in working with the Mac variant.

If You Have Errors

Some users are experiencing "Content Encoding Errors" when using Pale Moon and Zealotry. As best we can tell, this is due to an incompatibility between Windows 8.1, Pale Moon, and Plugins. If you have this problem (or any other), we suggest instead using Mozilla's extended-release version of Firefox, which branched at Firefox 52. It's expected to remain supported until at least June 28, 2018, by which time Mozilla is planning to jump their ESR to a post-plugin phase. This is therefore a short-term solution, but we expect to have full release of our New HTML5 client well before that.

To install it:
The Big Picture

Our larger-scale goal is to introduce a new client that will be usable on any browser and make our games generally more accessible. We've had a HTML5 client in process since last year, but are currently hitting roadblocks that make a deployment before November 14 problematic. We've also just started a second project, which would be more specifically focused as a Zealotry replacement, without worries about new bells or new whistles. Both of these possibilities are being done out-of-house, by Skotos players, but they're receiving our highest level of attention for whatever support they need, as this is all our top priority.

So, consider this a short-term fix, but in the meantime if you use Zealotry, please download one of the alternative browsers and test them out ASAP.

  • Minor Changes

    A bug allowing locks to be installed in doors that are public property has been fixed. This should not affect places that were set to be permissible under previous changes.

    A bug preventing the jump command from working properly has been fixed.

    A bug preventing you from matching or otherwise interacting with certain items directly or consistently (usually those that are dirty or bloodied) has been fixed. Relatedly, cleaning of equipment has been tweaked slightly remove dirt slightly more intuitively.

    A number of bugs causing certain skills to not function under certain circumstances have been rectified.

    A bug causing warrants to occasionally apply twice when passing through the Phoenix checkpoints has been fixed.

    An issue causing certain powders (namely ash) and liquids to take up an inordinate amount of volume has been fixed. Additionally, ash will accumulate in one pile rather than into an ever increasing number of piles.

    A bug causing the guard command to inappropriately cease when following your target has been fixed. Relatedly, NPC guards have been lobotomized and should no longer spam you by re-guarding you after each step.

    Finally, law enforcement characters should now be able to drag their hapless victims through Phoenix Guard checkpoints, but only when identified properly. We will be evaluating expanding this functionality in an ongoing basis.

    The change to unarmed attacks that took effect on Friday, which was inadvertently caused by other changes and bugfixes done on that day, has been reversed. Damage from unarmed attacks should be as it was last Thursday and before. We will continue to evaluate issues of balance in the game's combat skills, and will keep our playerbase as informed as possible when deliberate adjustments are made to information that is widely known.

      We've adjusted the BUY command so that different items with the same name can be purchased out of order by using a numeric article. For example:

      =[Stock]================================================
      Item for sale Price

      * Some unembellished silver earrings 21t 574d 2st
      * A silver bracelet 10t 908d
      * A burnished gold bracelet bearing pink tourmaline ornament 49t 1391d
      * A silver necklace 10t 908d
      Some unembellished silver earrings 3t 786d
      A gold bracelet 4t 666d 2st
      + Some unembellished silver earrings 2t 1189d

      A '*' beside a listing denotes an item of the highest quality.
      Listings prefaced with a '+' denote our inexpensive line of items.
      ================================================== ==

      To purchase the gold bracelet that is listed second on this stock list, you can use the syntax:

      BUY 2ND BRACELET

      To purchase the cheap (+) earrings, the third set of earrings listed, you can use the syntax:

      BUY 3RD EARRINGS

      And to purchase the second gold bracelet, the unadorned one, you can do either:

      BUY 2ND GOLD BRACELET

      or

      BUY 3RD BRACELET

        As a follow-up to the previous change, the BID command will now allow you to use a number to match your item.

        The STOCK command will now accept a string. STOCK <string> will match all of <string> that is available in a shop's stock. For instance:

        STOCK EARRING at Mondan's returns

        =[Stock]================================================== ====
        Item for sale Price

        * Some unembellished silver earrings 21t 574d 2st
        Some unembellished silver earrings 3t 786d
        + Some unembellished silver earrings 2t 1189d
        Some unembellished silver earrings 3t 510d
        * Some unembellished silver earrings 10t 972d 2st
        * Some plain silver earrings 9t 699d
        + Some plain silver earrings 2t 1291d
        Some plain silver earrings 3t 34d 2st

        A '*' beside a listing denotes an item of the highest quality.
        Listings prefaced with a '+' denote our inexpensive line of items.

              The selftrain command will now enter into a selection menu if the action name matches more than one possible skill to be advanced. Hopefully this will cut down on the confusion and accidental self-training of the wrong skill.

              Thanks to TaylorMDavis for the suggestion.

                  Dog a little bit too much for you? Use the abandon command in front of Canus to ensure the pup has a good home.

                    Diagnose will now tell healers if a broken bone needs to be set. This was intended from the beginning, but was bugged until now (thanks to Raphael).

                    Thank you to Marti765 for the report/suggestion.

                      The FREE and RELEASE commands have been updated to cover a wider range of grapples and snares.

                        The names of snares have been adjusted slightly to make it easier for foresters to work on them.

                        Thank you to Clamdigger for the feedback.

                          Using a farming implement (such as a sickle or scythe) will make gathering grass more fruitful for outdoorsmen.

                            The short stats command (SST?ATS) will now provide information on who you are guarding and who is guarding you.

                            Thank you to Cbaker for the suggestion.

                              Null macros with 0 characters of text will no longer be permitted or recognized by the parser due to widespread lag-inducing abuse. Folks, entering thousands of commands per second can be a significant source of lag for the machine. Don't do it.
