• Revision of character skill slot cost:

Up to 4 skill slots = 250 per slot
5th slot = 500
6th slot = 1000
over 6 = 1500 per slot

With this change we have had to disable buying multiple skill slots at a time in the "Skill Slot Purchase" menu. If you wish to purchase multiple skill slots for a character now you must enter the menu again for each skill slot you wish to purchase. The "cost" next to the menu choice for purchasing skill slots has also been removed from the menu as the cost will be determined after you tell it which character you're trying to purchase a skill slot for.

• The SKILLS command will now display Languages a bit differently, with language points added to the end of each language's line. The line for basic ranks will still display SP.

The GET/TAKE command, when used on someone stuck in quicksand, will now attempt to pull them out instead of just letting you carry around a bugged character.

• The frequency at which one acquires "Nightmare Tears" has been reduced. Also, there is no longer any guesswork as to if a tear has "expired". If a tear reaches that point, it will be readily apparent, and you won't be negatively effected by "expired" tears anymore.

And for those of you not familiar, an "expired" tear is one that has had it's benefits dissipate completely, and will no longer give any benefit. The benefits do degrade over time, so the best time to crack a tear is as soon as possible after having acquired it.

Tears are still affected by the SP you've gained for the cycle, and the sp provided by them do still count as sp gained for the cycle (effecting your sp gain after using it, just as if you'd gotten the sp through skill actions).

• Malezzerai has now been activated! His shop can be found open during daytime hours just northwest of Caesarea in Monlon. For a part of the evening, he can also be found at the Pious Plum, Oona's bar.

I am still adding more dialogue responses to him, but he has dozens to work with already. If you're not sure what to ask him about you can say the word "Topics" to him to get a random list of 10 topics displayed to you (saying "Topics" won't be visible to others.)

He is also the first NPC with a successfully tested smoking AI: probably my most important contribution to TEC behind the two globi. Offer him a pipe with some leaf in it while he's in the bar and let him enjoy a few drags.

If you have any suggestions for dialogue keywords, feel free to post them in his thread.

As he is the single NPC with the highest amount of dedicated code in the game, it is entirely possible that he'll have some rough edges to smooth out. Please @report any that you come across.

His shop has some unique mechanics as well: I created several new instruments (and updated a few others) for sale there. All of them have been given features for use with the 'play' command, but you're of course still able to free emote with them as well. They also have lore information stored on them for use with the 'recall about' command. His shop sells five standard instruments, and has a small chance of periodically generating a slightly rare item as well. It has a smaller chance of stocking a GM-altered instrument.

Thank you all for your patience as I've worked on this, and I hope you find that he has been worth the wait.

• Who is eligible for a Veteran Character Package
1. Any character ended via the END command (under ANY circumstances), will NOT be awarded a free VC package.
2. Any character that is killed off via GM assistance at the player’s request, will NOT receive a free VC package.
3. Any character that is already a previously awarded VC due to a “justice PK”, will NOT receive a free VC package if they are yet again the victim of a “justice PK” (for clarification, being declared EotR? AND being killed due to this status is considered a “justice PK”).
4. Any character that is a victim of a player awarded PK, WILL be awarded a free VC package.
5. Any character that is killed via a “justice PK” WILL be awarded a free VC package as long as it does not conflict with a previously stated rule.
6. Any character killed by a GM due to an event or story arc (initiated by the GM) WILL be awarded a free VC package.

We have discussed and are planning implementation of a new system that will somewhat affect #2 in this list.

The new command will be @chopping-block, which will give the player the ability to add a character of theirs to a list of characters they are willing to have die by GM intervention. Adding a character to this list will not guarantee a character will be targeted to be killed off by a GM and be awarded a VC package, but it will allow us to see if characters that are involved in any events we hold are on this list, and if appropriate, are willing to have that character killed during the course of the event. If this happens, the player of that character WILL be awarded a VC package for the death of that character.

We want to make it very clear that just because you haven't added your character to the chopping block, your characters are NOT immune to dying at the hand of a GMNPC. For example, if your character is NOT on the chopping block yet decides to blatantly throw themselves into situations that would result in death, they can still die at the hand of a GMNPC. In these situations we will make every effort to ICly warn the character in question, that if they continue their actions, death is a very real possibility. If they continue after such "warning", the next step could very well be the death of that character. And if a character dies is this fashion, they will, of course, be eligible for a VC package.

• Loot values of Ravanites are currently being tweaked (down significantly, I'm afraid.) As the story progresses, there will soon be a variety of Ravanite targets, and most of them will be within Iridine city, at different tier levels. With this in mind, I'll need to make sure that they don't become an easy gold mine.

• New RP Expenditure Option

We have added a new RP expenditure option; The option to retrieve deleted characters. The way this system will work is as follows:

From now on, any characters that you delete from your account that is NOT DEAD, and is MORE THAN 30 DAYS OLD, will be recorded in a list of retrievable characters on your account. A character in this list can be retrieved at any time by the player for 500 Role Points via the "Spend Role Points" menu.

If any player has characters they have deleted before this system was put into place wishes to have any of their old deleted characters added to their list of retrievable characters, they will need to file an @request listing which characters they would like added and give us time to verify that the character does indeed belong to the player who is requesting before adding them manually to the list. The deleted character MUST NOT BE DEAD and must have existed for MORE THAN 30 DAYS before deletion for it to be added to the list.

WE WILL NOT MOVE (OR ALLOW MOVEMENT OF) CHARACTERS FROM ONE ACCOUNT TO ANOTHER. A deleted character will only be added to the list of available characters to retrieve IF THAT CHARACTER ORIGINALLY BELONGED TO THAT ACCOUNT.

• As a side note to the previous announcement. Characters that were deleted prior to 2007 were at one point purged from the system. Unfortunately, any characters that were deleted before then will not be able to be retrieved under any circumstances.

• Very teensy update:

The ROTATE command how has additional syntax. You can do this:

ROTATE [<target>] [right|left]

Currently it is just an emote option with no mechanical functionality, but for puzzle hunters, keep it in your trick bag for future use.

---

The PEEK command has been added, based on an old player suggestion from 2008 that I had buried in my kill-an-hour pile.

It is a very simplified version of the look command that returns quick information about objects, places and people.

With anything, it will give the first line of a description.
peek vorpal
You peek at a vorpal sword.

You see a long, two-handed sword made from an unknown metal and polished to a glorious, chromatic sheen.

With users or creatures, it will add what is in their hands.
peek thug
You peek at a thug.

You lock gazes with a lower-class member of Iridine's streets.
She is carrying a bloodstained dagger in her right hand and nothing in her left hand.

With containers, it will tell you if it's open and whether there's something inside (but no further details.)
peek suit

You see nothing extraordinary about that.
A suit of bat-themed black carbon fiber armor looks like it has something in it.

With locations, it will just add a very basic line about crowd density (users included). It works on your current location, or through windows/doors/exits.
peek w
You peek at a wide cobblestone street.

You stand upon a wide cobblestone lane which goes from east to west.
A wide cobblestone street has a thin crowd of people.

It is visible to third parties if you are not hidden. It is only visible to yourself if you are hidden.

Feel free to test and bug me about any issues!

• The skinning mechanics have been overhauled to result in proper qualities based on ranks in all three skills + your roll over success, and the random factor now scales to a range based on your skill levels instead of just being capped by the skill (which results in: more ranks = higher "minimum" possible quality).

And because it seemed a little bland and could use some more TLC, I added a new skinning adjective to help you better judge how good a job you did. Instead of just "Masterfully" and "Skillfully", there is now also "Deftly".

Happy skinning!

• The RETRIEVE (and RECOVER) command has received an update:

When used in a store, you can now retrieve items you've recently sold to NPCs there. The IG cost is 120% of what they paid you for the item. The OOC cost is 100 rps, the same as discarded item recovery.

The syntax has remained the same, with bit of added stuff to handle the shopkeeper. You must use it from within the shop you sold the item in to recover it: Using the command outside of stores will operate as before.

You can only go back a maximum of 24 IG hours for non-custom items. Any items that you have used @custom on will remain on the list indefinitely: If we find a bunch of junk items being @custom'd for this, I will simply put the same time limit on them as well.

Note: Items are still destroyed regularly. If your item is destroyed, there will be no possibility of recovery. This happens a few times per week, so if the timing is bad, you may permanently lose items before the IG day has passed.

Remember to use @custom on any important items to protect them from this destruction.

NOTE REGARDING SALES USING BROKERS: This is recorded on the seller, not the original item owner. THE BROKER will be the one assuming the costs of recovery: Do not give a broker something you do not want to lose, or hope your broker is willing and able to fork up 100 rps.

NOTE REGARDING FREEBIES: As this counts as an RP purchase, you cannot use this feature. You will have 1 IG day to alter your account status.

Summary:
Non custom items have 1 IG day to be recovered: 100 rps, 120% buyback cost.
Freebie accounts can't use this.
@custom items you don't want to risk destroying, or better yet, be attentive of what you give to NPCs and brokers.

Another reminder: You say 'fix' to any repair NPC to see what they repair. If they don't answer, assume that they are just going to buy whatever it is you give them and don't be surprised when they do.

All of this means that GMs will no longer be returning items free of cost. If a GM does need to get involved in item recovery, it will still cost 100 rps.

• As an experimental feature, you can now pray at a shrine to Ereal to obtain a temporary boon. Such a pilgrimage can only occur once per real-life day. Visiting multiple shrines is possible, but the boon will only be granted if you do not have one already in place.

Once you've found a suitable shrine, use the PRAY command on that shrine.

Note - This is an experimental addition implemented primarily for testing purposes. Please report any associated bugs. This feature may be changed or removed without warning at any time.

Due to a bug in the code, shield break did much more damage than intended. While this has been fixed, a few shields have been utterly destroyed in the meantime.
