Forums Reversion

The cloud server that hosts the main Skotos web site and the forums experienced a hardware failure on Saturday morning that unfortunately led to severe database corruption. Several attempts to restore it failed.

This led us to our backups, but the timing was a bit unfortunate. Since the failure occurred on a weekend morning, we didn't see it until after a new backup occurred, which contained the corrupted data, and which removed our previous daily backup. This forced us to our weekly backup, which was unfortunately at the end of its time: six days old.

So, the forums are back, but we had a six-day reversion.

This should not have affects on the rest of the site, since the majority of our data is saved in our main-user-database or our games, all on remote machines.

Being able to follow someone while hidden was technically a bug. However, it has been fixed so that it may be allowed under certain conditions. Failing those conditions will not reveal you, but you will lose your leader.

You can now no longer build multiple campfires in the same fire-pit. Now you can only have the logical one campfire per fire-pit/room.

All forests should now allow fire-building.

Also, a handful of unique places that make sense to do so have been tweaked to allow fire-building. This is more of a "correction of an oversight in the design" than a minor change.

Please @report any problems (preferably from the spot you're having an issue at - that is incredibly helpful as the report logs the location for us).

Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad. Creativity is putting tomatoes in a fruit salad to make mango salsa. Philosophy is wondering if that means ketchup is actually a smoothie. Common Sense is knowing that no, ketchup is not a smoothie.

Protarian will once again properly answer to the various queries made to him about the skills that he teaches. A minor issue had prevented him from communicating properly. If you witness any other shopkeepers having the same issue (not responding to queries when they should) please send us a report and we'll look into it as soon as we can.

The finding firewood skill had a minor bug and would not let characters find firewood while in some forests. This includes the Traevant Forest and potentially many more regions. The bug has been fixed, so you will now be able to find firewood in these various regions.

In the Rock Valley burial grounds is a dangerous passageway where you have a chance of bumping your head against the low ceiling while moving through. Unconscious characters that were dragged out would still hurt themselves. This oversight has been fixed and you can now drag unconscious characters without them bumping their heads.

The warrant tablets showed an improper date (four years in advance) once constables scribbled down a warrant. The tablets will now show the proper year.

With the somewhat recent addition of new shovel type items, the setup deadfall snare skill will now show the proper echo for the tool you are using. This means that someone using a trowel will now show up using that whereas before it would show you using a shovel.

You arrive at a narrow tube. A gyrax, a gyrax, a gyrax, a gyrax, a gyrax, a gyrax, a gyrax, a gyrax, a large striped spider, and a gyrax are here. You are facing east. You see a ladder leading upwards and a sludge-filled tunnel leading downwards.

That there is the reason no one was ever seeing Steps sewer spawn anymore. One of the collapsed rooms must have caused an error in its severed exits to make it unrepairable by the tunnel system. Over time, spawn were generated there, trapped, and deactivated. I've fixed the errors and cleared out the daydreaming critters. You will again see gyraxes and friends spawning in the Steps sewers.

            ---

On a related note, I am redoing how the tunnels destroy and repair themselves to make them usable. This should be accomplished within a few hours.

              Steps Sewers Collapses
              • There is now a limit on how many sewer rooms can be collapsed at once.
              • It is now less likely to generate consecutive collapsed rooms. The largest stretch I found while manually resetting it was 7. There is now a minimum gap between collapsed rooms.

The quality calculation for Skinning has been fixed. It was previously ignoring most of the need for Basic Skinning. Now it takes that into account as was originally intended, so ranks in Basic Skinning now play the part they should in the final quality of skinned pelts.

                    • Several minor bug fixes:
                      • Fox fur pillows now show their appropriate color in the "look" description.
                      • Lathian now clears his bar/tables of empty glasses.
                      • Various wilderness regions that didn't have trappable animals now do.
                      • Hurghet the Nehal Barbarian Shopkeeper is no longer stark naked.
                      • Anteater/Frog tongues are now properly cookable.
                      • Wineskins from the Nehal village are now weighted appropriately.
                      • Waterskins filled from the blackvine well are now weighted properly.
                      • Honey no longer weighs more than it should.
                      • Snake fangs no longer weigh more than snakes, & are now weighted properly.
                      • Copperhead snakes no longer weigh as much as the average human.
                      • The Wayfarer innkeeper no longer ignores people trying to rent a room.
                      • The Step Back Inn no longer has an unnecessary wall blocking the "end" of the circular hallway from the common room. You can now enter at either end of the hallway from the main room.
                      • Several stores that were "out of stock" for some items have been restocked.

There were several dozen more, but all too minor to mention, on top of several dozen "typo" fixes.
