Downtimes: June 24 - July 2nd

We've got another batch of shutdowns coming in late June and early July, so that the machines can be repaired for the newest bug, the ZombieLoad CPU bug.

In general, the Genesis games (Grendel, TEC, TEC-Test) all have reboots scheduled for the absolute middle of the night, so I'll be taking each down the previous evening at midnight and bringing them back up the next morning at 9am.

The SkotOS games have always been more robust about reboots, so we'll let them reboot on their own, though there's some chance for an ~2 hour data loss. In any case, I'll be checking them after the 2-hour window when I can, though Marrach has a middle-of-the-night reboot, so that'll be the next morning.

The UserDB and Web reboots will cause some downtime for the entire site, but again they will hopefully come up cleanly.

    Normally this wouldn't be announced, but as it could now be construed as a death-trap (if blundered into unprepared)...

    The BHC entrance has been changed. Before you storm in, weapons drawn, -pay attention to your surroundings-. Leaving is not as easy as entering anymore.

      Hailing from Gadaene, Adaventas Melcia has just established a brand new mercantile establishment selling various types of fabrics and threads. He is located in the port of Blackvine.

      Similarly to Mondan, Adaventas' stock will be updated every now and then automatically. At minimum, four new pieces of stock will be added to the shop to be sold every day at random intervals. The fabrics and threads will come in a wide variety of colors that is otherwise unavailable in all of the current tailoring shops. Only half, full and double lengths of cloth will be available for sale at a rate slightly lower than Marcavia's pricing.

        NEW: Creature Control Room

        A new room has been opened up in the Welcome Area. Inside this room there is a big red button. What this button allows you to do is emulate a random creature that is currently spawned within the game. The list of available creatures will not include certain creatures that would create problems if player controlled. Examples of the excluded creatures are shopkeepers, NPC healers, NPC constables, etc. Each time you push the button it compiles a list of creatures available to emulate and chooses one at random, so you never know what you may end up with. Also, you never know what state the creature may be in at the time you jump into them. This means you could jump into a creature that has spawned and wandering around all by itself, or you may jump into one that is engaged in battle and about to die, so keep in mind whenever you use this button you’re taking a gamble. If there are no available creatures to emulate, you will be told so and the process will stop. Creatures that are emulated in this fashion will drop any items that they may have been able to loot from PCs at the time they die or log out. To stop the emulation of the creature you will need to sleep them as you do any other character, or die. Once emulation is stopped, the player no longer controls that creature. The cost to use this button is 30 Role Points. When a player pushes the button they will go through a confirmation process before the Role Points are deducted.

        As always, please @report any problems you may run into when using this new system.

          Just to give everyone a heads up, we had a small error that has created some major problems. This error happened around 9pm on Tuesday and we have spent the time since trying to rectify the problem without having to revert to a backup, but at this time it seems we are going to have to revert to Tuesday's 4pm backup to fix this issue. We are very sorry for any inconveniences this may cause and appreciate your patience in this matter.

            From now until the revert, the creature controller button in the WA has been made to be free to push. No RPs will be deducted for emulating creatures until the revert happens.

                I have been made aware of rumors of players discussing retrieving old deleted characters just so they can get them back to have them killed so they can receive a high level Veteran Character package. Let me put those thoughts to rest. The time a character was "deleted" will not count towards the age of the character when determining which VC package will be awarded upon their death.

                  StoryPoints to go on Sale

                  In response to this announcement from Skotos we will be overhauling our Role Point expenditure options in the very near future. In doing so, we will be opening up some options for freebies to spend Role Points and adjusting the cost of some expenditures for basic and premium accounts as well. We look forward to this being a positive change for TEC.

                    Attribute Changes

                    We will soon be making some minor adjustments to attributes and the role they play in skills. This will be a three-stage process.

                    The “gap” attributes play in combat and other skills will be narrowed somewhat. What this means is the difference an attribute makes in your roll between (for example) the current “average” and “inhuman” should be slightly reduced.

                    In conjunction with this change we will be raising the “max” (background numbers) that an attribute can be taken to. This will mean the current descriptive adjectives you see when you view your characters stats will be altered, although the background numbers themselves will not change. Only those with above “very good” as an attribute description will change. For example, "inhuman” will now become "outstanding", although the actual background number will remain the same.

                    You will not be able to purchase attribute potential beyond the current max. A new system will be developed and put into place to allow attributes to go beyond the current max.

                      • You may notice we have broken down the former "Custom Item" into two categories. One includes armor/weapons/face covers. These are items that give a mechanical advantage to a character IG. The second category is for items that are purely for RP purposes and give no mechanical advantages. As always, there are varying IG cost related to some of these purchases as well.

                              Organzational Changes

                              In an attempt to help streamline Organizations we have made a few changes:

                              The ability to add and remove leaders has been enabled for some orgs. These will include any org that isn’t a government run or answerable to “higher powers”.

                              Militia orgs (any org formed to help in the defense of any or the entire republic) will now fall under the umbrella of the Legion. What this means is that the Centurion of Legio 1 will have the power to add and remove leaders to any such org. Currently these orgs consist of the MVG, the TM, and the BVM. The Centurion is not to “micro-manage” these orgs, but there to assist in leadership issues and to offer advice in the way they are run. This translates into an In Game Senate decree and should be taken as such. Any of these orgs that are currently having leadership issues should approach the Centurion and discuss these issues with him.

                              This should assist in the transitions of leadership in many orgs and allow those that wish it to have multiple leaders (access to the @org menu) if they wish.

                              Note: A character cannot remove THEMSELF as leader of an org. If they wish to pass on leadership, they will need to add the new leader and then let the new leader remove them as a leader.

                                Some of you may have already noticed we have a new option in the PLAY command from the Welcome Area. If not, here's your heads up.

                                [P] Spend Story-Points

                                This creates a new option of Story-Point only purchases. These purchases are NOT purchases that are available through the current Role-Point purchase system. We will be adding to this type of purchase option in the future.

                                Currently the only "working" options under this new menu is the old "Covert Story-Points" and a new option of purchasing attribute increases. Attribute increases purchased in this fashion do NOT require training at the courses to actually increase the attribute. These purchases will actually increase the attribute and not just it's "potential". The cost of this option is 50 Story-Points per 1 increase and is currently only available to premium subscribers.
