  • Anyone else find that they need their forum posts approved?

For some reason whenever I write a new post in my Logs and Stream thread nothing gets posted. Seems like someone needs to approve my postings.

    What's that all about?

... and I just approved this post, so that it'd appear.
I don't see anything unusual about your account that would make your posts require approval - but I don't know the details of how it figures out what to moderate and what to allow through.

Aha! You've got posts about "streaming"

A lot of our spam is advertising for "live stream" and other streaming services, so it's probably picking up that you use similar language to the posts that are constantly being marked as spam.

If there's another word you can use for future posts, that'll probably help you avoid the automatic moderation.

A solution to make up for the failures of a system still means there's an error in the system.

          Can you do better?

PhilippeCP, your account according to the stats on your little profile card next to posts also only has 36 posts (as of this writing). Sure, 36/36 non-spam but it's a low number of posts over a 7 year lifetime (also showing joined June 2010). I don't have any real knowledge of vBulletin's or Akismet's algorithms right now, I'll look some up soon, but if I had to guess at what I'd do you're still kind of not fully vetted. I know, no one is super active on this forum and the average posts/lifetime numbers are probably low across the board for us, but it wouldn't have been written for us and based on how well they've done updating everything else that worked with our previous forum system I don't think they'd have modified this either.

I think we should reduce the anti-spam posting mechanisms and increase the bot registration counters, IMHO.

Again, this is just a guess.

That's because Shannon deleted six years of my postings about four months ago. So I mean... This isn't a problem I have an ability to solve. I have always been active.
And before you ask: I did not deserve to have my posts deleted. Shannon made a mistake and this is the next piece of fallout from that.

Was only a suggestion as to why this account may look suspicious to an automated system. It's a pain to have to deal with your situation and I hope it can be resolved.

I agree that there's an error in the system. To me, it looks like the system made a false positive.

Can I (or Skotos) do better? To be completely honest, probably not.

There's a lot of spam, and no perfect way to deal with it. I added those "words that should not be spoken" to the list, because we were literally getting hundreds of spam posts slipping through, and searching the forum history most of the banned words only came up in 1 or 2 legitimate posts. There were many complaints about the volume of spam, from many different players.

So, while I acknowledge that it's not a perfect solution, it was the best solution I had available.

I don't think this is a problem you can solve - but I'm not sure it's a problem I can solve either. If I do find a solution, I'll absolutely use it. In the meantime, I'll try to minimize the impact when posts get incorrectly quarantined, and try to be as transparent as possible when letting you know why something got blocked. We've all got to work within the systems that we've been given!

                    Hey Shazrael,

That was a great answer. I understand you can only do so much with what you have. I also understand that the forum spam is a real problem.

I really appreciate you looking into this and taking the time to answer me back. If you say this is the best we can do then I'm happy with the result.
More importantly I'm happy that you continued this dialogue in the way you did. I hope that in the future more topics can be addressed this way.

                    Bully for you,
                    Philippe
