  • Computer Question

I'm computer-retarded and I hope I'm wording this question right. Is there some way I can organize/choose/eliminate what programs and stuff start up when I turn on my computer? Like the stuff on the bottom right hand corner of the toolbar near the clock thingy. I'm using a Windows 2000.

    Thanks folks.

Try to download STARTUP COP!LOT or Startup Mechanic.

Just so you're aware, the 'clocky thing' is actually a clock, and can be quite useful.

Thanks to both of you. The STARTUP COP!LOT did the trick and some other stuff that I thought was cool too.
Nice to know that the hardest working guys in TEC still have time for little 'ole me

Another good alternative for future problems is CCleaner....Can set your startup programs, uninstall programs that won't seem to uninstall and lots of other stuff.

or another solution to this problem is hidden inside windows itself (thought I'm not sure it works for windows 2000). Goto run (windows key + R) and type msconfig. Your startup items are under the startup tab, while your background programs are under your services tab.
            Awesome.

There are around half a dozen methods like that in Windows, and if you want to get rid of a startup program you have to try one after another until you find one that works. Better to use a canned routine that does all that for you, unless you want to learn the details yourself. Four years ago I'd have just dived in, but life is too short to learn all the arcane details of a dying proprietary OS.

I'm an MSCONFIG addict. I go through it at least once a month just to make sure some retarded program isn't clogging up stuff.

I might check out those other programs, though sounds silly to download more programs to get rid of others, ya know?

                MSCONFIG ftw!

                  Another question:

Anyone know any web page building programs/things? Preferably free, I have a way of uploading them, but...uh, I have nothing to upload.

                  Thanks

(oh and I'll be sure to add a TEC ad if ever I can make a site)

Nerd. Notepad doesn't have enough 1337 buttons to program anything! That's like trying to use paint to make maps!

Notepad runs out of character space within about 20 seconds, so unless you use frames and hundreds of tiny pages loading to it, you will need Wordpad.

I've done well with NVU for simple things. I don't know how good it is for full-fledged web-authoring because the kind of people who'd read my stuff don't like that sort of thing.
