Downtimes: June 24 - July 2nd

We've got another batch of shutdowns coming in late June and early July, so that the machines can be repaired for the newest bug, the ZombieLoad CPU bug.

In general, the Genesis games (Grendel, TEC, TEC-Test) all have reboots scheduled for the absolute middle of the night, so I'll be taking each down the previous evening at midnight and bringing them back up the next morning at 9am.

The SkotOS games have always been more robust about reboots, so we'll let them reboot on their own, though there's some chance for an ~2 hour data loss. In any case, I'll be checking them after the 2-hour window when I can, though Marrach has a middle-of-the-night reboot, so that'll be the next morning.

The UserDB and Web reboots will cause some downtime for the entire site, but again they will hopefully come up cleanly.

GENESIS:

- Shutdown Grendel (late Sunday 6/23)

- Startup Grendel (early Monday 6/24)

- Shutdown TEC (late Monday 6/24)

- Startup TEC (early Tuesday 6/25)

- Check TEC Client (9pm Tuesday 6/25)

- Shutdown TEC-Test (late Thursday 6/27)

- Startup TEC-Test (Friday 6/28)

SKOTOS:

- Marrach (Monday early morning 6/24)

- Ironclaw (Monday 10pm-midnight 6/24)

- Lovecraft, Lazarus (Monday 8pm-10pm 7/2)

MAIN SITE:

- UserDB (Monday 10pm-midnight 6/24)

- Web (Sunday 9pm-11pm 6/30)

If TEC had loot boxes what would they be?

    Hi folks,

So if TEC had loot boxes you could buy for real dollars what do you think or wish they contain? Should you be able to earn them via IC activities?

Here are a few thoughts of mine regarding what they might contain:
    • A title/emote/interaction NPCs have with you from time to time (ie. walking by a constable nods to you, a priest sees you and says a prayer, etc.)
    • RPs
    • Special haircut available from the barber
    • New scars availalbe from the generator
    • SPs
    • Bolts of cloth in special colors
    • Increase in Nehal reputation (via stash of fish/tokens?)
    • Increase in Franlius reputation (via stash of armbands?)
    • Increase in reputation from that Aralex guy I've never used (via an omelette?)
    What do you guys think?

I have to agree with what some people said here already. Loot boxes are basically gambling whether there is RL money or game money involved. I wouldn't appreciate moving the game in this direction. For arguments against lootboxes feel free to use google, there are too many to count.

It would be nice to be able to get a custom pet for stps.

If I recall, towards the end you could have requested a custom maneuver, but it would have been an identical version of an existing move and it was also moved back one slot in terms of difficulty. Let's say you wanted Sword Jab, you would have gotten it with a brand new prose. Same identical damage, same blocks. The only difference is that you would have gotten it as an Average difficulty move instead of Easy, but it would have been your own.

    Yes, please.

This only applies if RL money can be used to purchase said lootboxes or if it can be converted into IG currency. Sharonpa's current "lootboxes" are fine because you cannot trade RL money towards IG money, but it could apply to RPs purchased lootboxes since you can purchase StPs with RL money and convert them into RPs.
As for trading RL money for IG money, some laws may be restrictive enough to consider buying a domus to be merely a step in spending RL money for IG money. The Netherlands and Belgium do not include wording requiring RL money to be spent even.

Also, in more and more parts of Europe, loot boxes are downright illegal, and where they're not there's legislation in the works.

Curious how the Senator's bill would deal with STP to RP conversion, or stat purchases. This could be considered a pay to win mechanic, which the bill is also targeting.

*Sidenote, for the US version, explicitly limiting the game to Adult Only may be a way to sidestep the legal issues

Absolutely NOTHING that promotes pay-to-win and, of course, NOTHING that requires real-time money to purchase. You can, after all, simply earn your RPS by actually roleplaying and just going to events if you wish to spend RPS on a "loot box." Also, this is an RP-based MUD. So, anything in a loot box I'd want to be RP related in some fashion.

    * A free temporary or permanent makeover at the hairdresser

    * A custom entrance / exit that could either be temporary or permanent depending on the "loot box."

    * A random piece of clothing or armor that a lot of people seem to want but can't always get because it's expensive or you can't find anywhere (corsets, skirts, doeskin cloaks)

    * A ticket to choose a special piece of furniture you can't usually get: An actual bookshelf kinda like the library one, a glass-fronted cabinet double the capacity of the standard ones, etc.)

    * The ability to learn one of the old languages not normally taught from a special teacher

    * 100 talents or other monetary value worth the cost of the RPS to purchase

    * Free choice of a special cloth or thread

    * Free hood or other face covering

500 StPs for a domus translates to 349.50$.

    200 RPs = 34.95$ which also makes a custom weapon/armor piece worth 349.50$

    That 20,000 RPs VC10? 3495$.

    Stat upgrade (1000 RPs) = 174.75$.

And that's on top of what someone already pays for their basic/premium accounts (premiums do get free StPs tho). These prices are insane especially for a text-based game that requires a subscription for anything that is RP based and where the staff is on a voluntary basis (except the admin who gets paid).

I want to echo a few things others have said. I think transparency of what something does is going to be critical. The way the game used to be and why the chargen is the way it is doesn't really count anymore. Give us freedom to choose our builds from a position of knowledge instead of making it a guessing game. When I roll a character in DnD I choose what I want the build to be based on what I know how the mechanics work.

I also think the price should START at 10000 RPs. It could even be a flat 10k rps for each change. It shouldn't be something you do on a whim.

A week of SP gains that never diminished. This couldn't do more harm than a few changes made over the past two years and would probably generate enough capital to buy some fancy server shit that'd make the game run even faster.

Hah! I certainly wouldn't be upset to throw some money at the GMs for this kind of stuff.

At the end of the day it's just a thought exercise and I'm curious to see what people are interested in.

I vote NO LOOT BOXES EVER. Keep your gambling in casinos, games are for fun, not for gambling all your money away. Loot boxes can go to hell. I don't even want them for sale for role points, since you gotta pay to use those, or get those. Which is available to buy for real money via story points, and thus... gambling for real money. Hell no.

That said, I'm interested in hearing any ideas of what players would enjoy spending StPs on, that don't already exist.

    Carry on!
