  • Caravan Work

Caravans will now gather periodically at the Vetallun road marker, heading to the town of Vetallun.

These caravans are heavy in goods but light in guards. Naturally, they'll pay well for some decent warriors to come along for the ride.

You can spot a caravan gathering through a large number of pack animals, as well as a caravan master calling out for travellers and guards. To sign on as a guard, ask the caravan master for a job.

    ex.

"master Do you have work for me?
say to master I hear you have a job that needs doing.

If he finds you acceptable, he'll explain the terms and propose to you. After this, simply confirm this to him by saying yes.

    "master Yes, I'll take it.
say to master Sure, I can handle it.

The caravan will proceed on its destination either when there are enough guards or when it has finished with its preparations. Make sure you use the 'follow' command on the caravan master or you'll get left behind. Caravans will proceed pretty smoothly unless they get interrupted on the way. A caravan's progress is halted by hostile attackers (such as bandits), which have to be killed or driven off in order for the caravan to proceed.

Once the caravan arrives at its destination, it will proceed to unpack. Make sure to ask the caravan master for your payment!

    "master My pay?
say to master What about my payment?

The caravan will leave after it has finished unpacking.

    Additional notes:

    - Caravans will take, at most, five PC guards.

    - Caravans will only take on guards with some basic combat skills. You must have at least thirty combat ranks in order to sign up.

    - Caravans will only pay guards that have signed on in the beginning. Travellers that meet them halfway will not be paid.

    - Caravan goods *can* be looted by PC bandits. However, this is quite obviously against the law. Caravans travelling along the Republic's roads are under the direct protection of the Legio. There may also be additional complications if the caravan master survives to report you to the proper authorities.

    - At the current time, there will only be caravans between Vetallun and the city of Iridine. Further routes may be added as we work out bugs.

    - If you're a traveller just looking for safety, it may be worth coming along with the caravan to gain the protection of its guards. Caravans generally don't mind the extra company.

    - As always, please @report any errors and @feedback any concerns.

I think this is a great idea.

This is one thing I have been waiting for for a long time.

        Kudos to the GMs!

          Addendum:

          - Caravans will take about 10-15 minutes preparing after they first appeared, so be quick about signing up if you plan to join. They will stop their preparation time and leave immediately if they get a full complement of five guards.

          - Caravans generally have regular schedules, based on gameworld time, so it would pay to observe when caravans leave for which destinations. Generally, caravans like to travel during the day. No caravans will gather between midnight and dawn.

          - If you do decide to take the path of banditry, keep in mind that merchants gossip like the wind. No caravans will hire you if you have a history of attacking them.

            Thank you Japes for this.

Any problems with law enforcement officials such as constables and legionaries getting paid for guarding the caravans?

Does the escort start at vet road only, or does it start at the crossroads as well?

Legally, there's nothing wrong with Legio or constable personnel getting paid for guard jobs when they're not on active duty. However, it's really up to your superiors. I suggest you consult with them.

There are a couple of mid-day routes from Vetallun back to Iridine.

You guys will never cease to amaze me

It's the small things in life that keep people happy

Also on a side note, regarding the Traevant Militia, some mutual relationship between the TM and the goods escort might be an idea, although you'd have to concurr with Kered on this.

Also, what are the PC guards reactions to Faceplates right now?
I.E. If a member of the TM were to help them out in an ambush wearing a faceplate would the person/persons wearing the plates be attacked also? Or if people going along as guards wore plates.

If they attack plates as it stands, maybe we could let them know who we are, without the plates on, then the masters could gossip along with the rest of the caravaneers, much like you mentioned about if you get on the wrong side of them, and you would then be able to wear your plate and be sweet with them, unless of course you attacked them.

                    Just a humble idea

Will the caravans run without a full complement of PC guards?

How good do you need to be to get one of these jobs?

It just seems odd to me that a healer with no weapon ranks can join the caravan yet my warrior wasn't allowed to get paid for joining the caravan. Oh and they were taken on as a guard, not a healer.

I think that you should at least have to have some weaponskill. That way it might be good for newer warriors to come on once in a while to get a little extra coin. The disadvantage would be the risk of a newling getting beat down.

Five healers guarding the caravan is a perfect chance to demonstrate to the caravan master what a great employee he missed out on by slaughtering them all.

                              Yes.

It just seems odd to me that a healer with no weapon ranks can join the caravan yet my warrior wasn't allowed to get paid for joining the caravan. Oh and they were taken on as a guard, not a healer
The healer might have been good at ACMs, which would qualify as combat ranks.

The NPC caravan workers are not law enforcers. They won't pursue criminals or attempt to arrest people for having disguises on. As for the PC caravan guards, well they're more unpredictable.

BTW, If these caravans are successful, then the first probable expansion of these jobs will be a Vetallun-Blackvine route. Of course, this is only possible if there's a solid cobblestone path for the pack animals.

                              Finish that road already, dammit.
