Skotos Forums Closing: September 30

The Skotos Forums are officially closing on September 30, 2020. They will go read-only on that date, and will be removed entirely sometime afterward.

We encourage the games that spun off of Skotos to create new discussion mediums of their own, and some have already done so. But the centralized discussions for Skotos will soon be a thing of the past (just as the centralized Skotos site is).

We've also posted a goodbye message to the community on our main page, which you can find here:

  • What is good role playing?

Let me preface (begin) this by saying I completely understand the need to allow everyone to play their characters as they see fit. I will also preface and say that this might come off as a rant, but since I've been mostly quiet to the general populace of the game for so long here it goes.

I am not speaking for anyone else, but I will say that I have had several conversations about this over many months with other players.

Alright, so first....the atmosphere of this game to put it bluntly is ridiculously reminiscent of my days in a small rural high school where there was nothing better to do than care who was dating whom, which girl was prettier, and which guy could get more women.

I understand this sort of role play may be quite fun for some of you. Especially since some of you may not be long from those days? Just a guess.

Anyway, let's move on to this sort of role play and (dun dun dun) com. I've heard all of the arguments like -- just turn off your com if you don't like it, log off if you don't like what's going on in game. Now.. great suggestions if you want people to be utterly disinterested and not play. (Ever notice I only role play Syren with a handful of characters). Short and sweetly I don't have any interest in role playing with people who act like high school students. I digress. So, what else usually do we talk about on com? Say, Monty is out, or Wilhelm's on the rampage. If I have to shut off my com because you're going on and on about who's sleeping with who I miss game play that I really enjoy.

Secondly, let's think about all of the wonderful storylines we're missing out on because staff is getting no support for interesting -really interesting- plots that everyone is seemingly oblivious to except the players who take this game seriously as a scifi role play. Instead everyone seems to be way more interested in gosspiy cat-fighting role play.

Good role players are avoiding this game. We've lost an amazing set of players do the childish role play in this game.

I'm going to use Veronica as an example (not to embarrass or mock her) but to show you how a player has come in, set up a standard for their character and ultimately had to change them due to her experiences in game. She started out as a very childish character and grew into one of the most serious and helpful characters in the game on both IC and OOC levels. Now that's great role play. Please let your characters grow and learn. Please don't consistently use the same tactic with your character and day in and day out create the same conflicts over and over.

It's so tiresome, we lose characters and players because of this stuff. Become a serious role player. You don't have to be a "nerd"! ( I don't like star wars or Lord of the Rings or any of that).

So to sum it up after the long rant -- for me (and I'm sure others) petty arguing constantly over com, gossip and childish behavior aren't fun anymore. It's old it's done with. Can we try to focus on making some interesting characters in game? (I'm not talking about crazy characters who think weird things).

Any, I would like to hear everyone else's thoughts on this. But keep it polite and productive or it will be useless

Yet again, I'm going to add my two cents because I agree on this. The standard of roleplay occuring in this game has gone from adequate to... rather poor in my opinion.

When I first started this game, I loved the way the game ran. Instantly I was in an experimental colony on another world, new to the sights and sounds of the future. I was introduced to a friendly bunch of metas hanging around in the lobby. From the start, I felt involved and in a -game-.

But slowly, while the intricacies of my char's life kept me distracted, new players arrived and the old started vanishing one by one. The change was subtle at first, a change of atmosphere until suddenly, -wham-. A new generation of chars existed, the old all but gone.

Admittedly, some may have had reasons for leaving that didn't involve this new style of RP, but the ones I know OOC... I know they left because they were fed up of the silly fights that ruled the colony and the constant arguing. Nobody wants to play a game full of negative emotions.

The point is... although you may enjoy the RP, others don't. The point of a social game is to socialise, not butcher each other like some adrenalised shooter RP game on a console.

Also... metas fighting metas? When they're being repressed by a corrupt government? Something's not right there. The metas are the only people of their race. Their very instinct would be for survival and not just personally. I know of many who wish to do an opposing plot against the government and they all have different ideas. The problem? They don't like each other enough to work together!

So... I lay this to you. Continue with this constant in-fighting and brawling in public and slowly destroy the game the staff have worked so hard to create for -you- or learn to change your chars, work together and help to make this game a success? Which do you choose?

I welcome any response to this as long as it is constructive and not specifically aimed at insulting my opinion.

    Gotta love Hunter Man

Striding along the path, rifle in my hand. My senses spreading, across this vast land. The beast inside, coming alive. Looking around, watching everything thrive. I know I can't come, to any harm. There's no need, for any alarm. I'm Hunter Man, wild and free. There's no-one else... quite like me!

The power of One means nothing, if there are not many to appreciate it.

I really do hate coming off as overly critical, but since it came up...

I'll start by saying I've been playing this game for 18 days now. My first day playing I was very much excited about the game. I did a lot of reading, as I always tend to do before getting into a game (or anything else for that matter), prior to logging in. I researched the theme, setting, forum posts, etc. Seemed like a good premise, so I made a character and logged in.

I can get into all the pluses and minus I've found, but in the interest of staying on topic I'll keep it to the point.

My experience with RP in TLP so far has been rather bad, in most respects. Itís come to the point where I have stopped RPing and interacting with people in general. The quote, "the atmosphere of this game to put it bluntly is ridiculously reminiscent of my days in a small rural high school", really sums it up. I've found that RP seems to be often rewarded with community distance, and something bearing a striking resemblance to player punishment. It does seem that player enjoyment and fun is something that is not taken into account when IC situations are developing. There's a distinct difference and a difficult balance when deciding on character consequences compared to player punishment.

I've also found there is an amazingly elitist attitude in the game followed by an extraordinary degree of uncourteous and malicious behavior which, though perhaps IC, really should be used in purposeful RP.

Normally I might try other options, or make another character, but I honestly don't have the time or patience for it at the moment. So I've learned my lesson in regards to RPing and simply avoid it all together, and play the game for numbers on my character's skill sheet.

I've heard all of the arguments like -- just turn off your com if you don't like it, log off if you don't like what's going on in game. Now.. great suggestions if you want people to be utterly disinterested and not play.
Good point. Even when I'm ignoring everyone (read: all the time) I have my com on.

There are some honestly phenomenal parts to TLP, things I've seen done better in this game than any other I've played. This happens to be one of the areas that my personal experience has proven to be lacking.

Yeah... To stay on topic... That's a problem. Sad part is... it's not new... If there was a structure like clans between Metas to explain why some are against others based on events that are part of the big picture, that wouldn't so much be a problem. Some actually already started some... Some cops aren't too pleased about the Wolfguard etc... Used to be people took sides too. They used to be radical about some things and didn't care about who agreed with em or not. Now they don't so much... One day they're helping the bad guys, the other day they're trying to get rid of em. Erases a lot of lines that probably should be there.
The fact it's random and almost always happens because people get bored or don't want their char to get anywhere actually happens a lot more than it should. (That's why the consequences are probably seen as a bit harsher than in other games by the way... but... I'm gonna argue that at least you don't get stuck in a cell forever, you get to rp it and staff gets involved with ya.)
I'm just surprised people only complain about this now. It's been happening a long time. I've been taking a break from the social worker aspect of Carhs' life lately. Cause that's pretty much all he's done for months. Sometimes a couple people get interested in a particular plot and I'm all for interacting with them with that... But I'm gonna be honest and say, I've mostly been rping with friends too. The main problem's that if I start dragging in some of the tension based on some plots or on how people've been acting (with the current situation we got now) I'm concerned it's just going to leave a bunch of people confused and start another mess of its own. So I step out of character quite a bit.

Anyway.... Since I don't like just pointing out at problems for sports... Here's my contribution... I'm gonna make some effort to restart some of the activities I was doing to give the new blood more chances to get exposed to some of the plots... or at least get exposed to other rpers and maybe get a chance to hear some of the stuff that's goin on...Can't promise it's gonna happen overnight cause of RL.
In my opinion, there isn't much else we can do about it other than showing where it should be going... So if you want change... probably should help out... Get involved... show up for events etc... Will be grand to have people help out with the old classes too that Roni set up.
Also... As Riva pointed out... A lot of the chars who knew stuff are gone all of a sudden. That's roughly one to two years' worth of info that the new peeps don't have access to if they can't find one of us.
All I'm trying to say's that it may not be just their fault... There's the fact their chars don't have access to all the cool stories from which to grow.
        Wolf...

          Opinion Part One

Alright, I guess it's my turn now. I say this beforehand, I'm just being honest and that's it. And if you don't like it... well, too bad.

I think back to when I created Sephi- ooh, bout 4 or 5 months ago. And, no offense to the owners of some characters, but instead of getting into the swing of being newly hatched, having someone to help her and guide her, Sephi gets thrown into a whirlwind of drama, backstabbing and lies. So I molded Sephraem accordingly- a distrusting, hurt woman. That's not what I intended for her to become. I had originally would have had her as my own personal "Number Six" in the Village, but that's neither here nor there.

Over the past 4 or 5 months, I swear I thought I was really in a bad episode of Jerry Springer- I kid you not. Who's sleeping with who, who cheated on this one with that one to get revenge, that one's running around the colony naked... It's no wonder the older players left and the new hatchlings run when an older character asks them if they want sex or to be in a relationship... or vice versa for that matter. Now we have the 45 day "No Sex or Intimate Relationship" rule... no offense, would have been nice to have had that when I started.

The infighting and drama really has to stop. The metas are supposed to stick together to protect themselves from the naturals. Guys, see it almost like how Karl Marx made it in his Communist Manifesto... without the overthrow I think. I don't want to have Sephraem constantly looking over her shoulder because some woman thinks she 'stole' her man and is out for her blood... Or that a guy won't take a hint that no means no. Give me a break. Leave the drama for the bloody school yard in the real world. If two characters break up, let us not turn it into a soap opera- just let it die! (And if anyone says 'pot calling the kettle black I will personally have Sephi shove her rifle up your character's butt.)

I'd write more, but I've got an event I need to finish dressing for. So I'll just finish this later...

          What are YOU lookin' at?!?!

Not to get nitpicky but maybe some examples would be useful to everyone. Now this would be an example of why this behavior runs rampant in this game. Say I wanted to comment about the way Sephraem is played in a polite and productive way...I would have to face in character consequences? I am hoping this wasn't literal....

Also, don't you believe that to be a bit of a childish -- "school yard" -- comment as you put it?

It just seemed a little hypocritical.

So long as everyone remains civil, I think this is a really good subject to bring up. I have noticed varying degrees of RP in the game, and sadly, sometimes rather poor RP.

I typically try to stay away from telling people how to RP, as everyone finds different aspects of a game they find fun. And how they want to RP their character is up to them. Some people are better roleplayers than others too, so just because someone is lacking in Rping skill, it shouldn't be held against them. I like to believe everyone can become better Rpers, if they apply themselves.

But... there are aspects of the game I wish (and hope) people will consider improving upon. One main problem I have is when characters don't seem to take setting and theme into consideration when playing their character. Modern day references/phrases/attitudes don't make sense in this setting. If players need some sort of reference in regard to how characters should behave, I recommend books like 1984 or Brave New World, and the television show, The Prisoner. Worth reading/watching even if you dislike the game too.

A number of our older players haven't been about regularly and that has also hurt a lot. History, stories, and background can be difficult for newer players to discover without older characters about. And several plots have been put on hold due to key characters vanishing on us.

If anyone has suggestions what staff can do to improve roleplay and enjoyment of the game, please feel free to tell us. Critiques are welcome too, if you think myself or staff is doing something wrong or need improvement somewhere.

This one I will say is not entirely accurate. There are several different factions among the metas, even with the "non-schoolyard" crowd, not necessarily against each other, but in beliefs on how they deal with the various issues that come up in game (Monsters, Blackguard, Naturals, Government). Seph just hasn't learned to tell the difference between them yet, since there are not really all that many or the players are not that active, in some of them. There are also those characters around who can explain the differing factions if asked.

Not all natural born are the enemy. Again, newer hatchling characters may not be able to tell the difference between the good, the indifferent and the ugly ones. Don't be afraid to ask the older metas

As I have stated before, some of the RP childishness I can understand from a character point of view as long as it is well done RP wise, and does not become a HUGE distraction to the other things going on in the colony. Those guilty of it, have been asked IC-ly to refrain from doing so over the com by me in the past. You know who you are.

There are also lots of sub-plot elements out there to learn, if you can get the right person to open up and tell you about them. Again, you have to ask IG if you want to learn about them.

Alpha does have a history. It may be a short one, but it is packed full of IC info for all players.

Very few people IC-ly have actually asked Fionnghuala (pronounce Finn-ella, by the way folks, which is why she goes by Nell), about the past. A few times she has shared the stories of some of the things she has seen, but by and large, most do not ask her anything about the past, they only ask her about employment. If you get her talking she will ramble on a long while about everything almost. Please note, that if she has a reason to distrust you - and there are several characters that have earned her distrust - she will not give as much information to for her own protection.

I agree with a lot of the stuff that has been said. It would be nice to see some consistency in character behavior. It would be nice to see people understanding the concept of "Every action has a consequence" as well. People who repeatedly violate colony rules just out of boredom are doing nothing to contribute to the game, especially when they complain about being incarserated for doing something wrong. If you violate a law, you get punished. I also find that the level of maturity is very low in a lot of cases. Lets not confuse mature behavior with mature content. There really is no need for the level of sexuality I have seen on the game thus far. Some of the lewd comments or suggestive conversation over the com really isn't needed. If you find yourself bored, start brainstorming, toss around plot ideas to staff, help us come up with an engaging plot that everyone can be involved in. And I'm not exactly talking about "can my character be turned into a vampire, or werewolf, or superman" (don't laugh, I've been asked....well...yeah laugh, BECAUSE it has been asked.) I would like to reiterate that I am not trying to tell anyone how to play their character, but the baby talk thing does get under my skin at times.

Ultimately I would like to hear more of what you the players want. Feel free to page me whenever I'm on. I may be a little slow in replying cause I am often times multitasking, but I will get back to you.

Just to add my opinion to the things being raised.

Nell: I would entirely welcome different factions of metas as long as the animosity between other metas remains as simple political competition. I also don't like that everyone is working alone and fighting each other. That's not factions, that's just outright mayhem. We need organisation here, not public brawls and shooting matches. I personally have never had my chars shoot anyone (Except themselves by accident and that's just funny) and yes... one came close, however not only was he under extreme stress, so was I, as I'm sure those you online at the time recall.

Lazarus: I agree that players should get more involved in plots. We may be a small group but guys and girls! We are the -foundation- of this game! If we ruin it, everyone else will accept this as the norm and the game would be in an even worse state! Try to pay more attention to IC things rather than using the game world as a rampant running and slaughtering ground for your own amusement. Believe me, it can be fun that way too, you don't believe me, try the other games.

Carhan: I agree that for some, it may not be their fault, however if they are now aware of their actions, they should put a little effort into changing their characters. They won't grow unless their players want them to.

Telemachus: I am amazed people would go that far out of context in the game. I know I bent the plot slightly once but I was aware of my actions and there was also an IC explanation for it, giving it context. I would like to say that don't try and make your characters some awesome hero-robot-dinosaur cow. This is a game, not a "Pimp my Char".

I just wanna note that not everything is always gonna remain simply political or simply factions. People aren't saints. Theres always gonna be a char that doesn't like this one or that one. You can't really stop that and it wouldn't make sense if everyone was friendly and nice with everyone. Its not that way in RL <.< People have varying opinions and varying views.

But aside from that I almost completely agree. I know I personally hide upstairs because I don't wanna bring my character down cause I get annoyed when I hear someone go on ooc. It really disrupts and distractsmy roleplay when people switch over to OOC talks instead of finding things to RP with IC. Or even IC. Mostly what I see is people just trying to get attention the same way over and over again. Or that every character acts exactly the same. I don't mean this to offend anyone. It just what I've been seeing. Alot of times I also people they fall or get injured but the way they act goes against that and there up again half a hour later doing what they normally do after falling down the stairs or some massive injury. It just doesn't make any sense IC even if you wanna be able to do stuff because of OOC reasons. And alot of the time people seem to complain there bored but do nothing about it. They just sit there and say there bored. I personally think if your bored then maybe you should try and fix it. I know in the past I've tried to give people alot of ways to relieve there boredom either by classes or parties or random games but no one seems to want to take the initive and from what I've seen whats it done for them so they can just enjoy. This is just what I've been seeing and of course I don't mean any offense to anyone

Its good for ones characters to learn and grow. And I encourage it. Maybe ya just need ya own experiences of your own or to learn about the past. If you wanna know something or get something started then just ask. I'm sure theres plenty of people out there more then willing to help you.

And I saw this post awhile ago when I was looking at new post button. I don't even play this game but I found it really good help and interesting and its related so I went to find it again in case anyone is interested - http://forum.skotos.net/showthread.p...ht=roleplaying - Not the first part about the chain of being thing but the parts after that have lottsa good tips

Ri, I agree that there are too many people fighting each other just for the sack of fighting. However, there are very real factions in the game; Greenskins (which are mostly inactive these days), those that actively support the government and work to spy on other metas for the government, those that plot things for their own benefit (in a good RP way, not just random mayhem), those that actively hate the government and all natural born, and those who are caught in the middle seeing good and bad in both sides, and those who are caught in the middle becasue they do not understand the undercurrents that swirl around them. I did not want to state all that outright previously since it is IC info that Characters should be allowed to discover on their own if they choose.

Veronica, like you, there are some characters I try to avoid spending time around becasue they do actions that seem to me to be not very conductive to the game as a whole or things that I feel that would not happen believibly in the setting (i.e. excessively playing sick, or repeatedly petting the Security Dogs after they have been badly bitten once). I try to not let inexperience at RP bother me, if the Player is trying to actively participate in a good way and trying to stick to the spirit of the game.

While I admit that romace, including ugly break-ups, happen IRL, and may in game, I am not here to focus my attention on romantic RP. When it becomes excessive to the extent that it -appears- to be all that is happening, I do not find that enjoyable. I would _suggest_ and _request_ but not _insist_, that if that is all your character is interested in, then perhaps this is not the game for you, and you should find one more in line with what you would prefer.

I do _not_ like excessive childishness when it is done simply to be childish. However, a small amount of childishness and innocence, when RP'ed well, goes a long way with me, becasue I feel that newly hatched would have a varying degrees of this, and there are ways to RP this that does not involve whining about how someone cheated on you romantically, or how tsomeone cheated romantically on a friend. If you have trouble finding a balance with playing this well and excessiveness, then perhaps you should consider not attempting to RP it out, or ask people privately how you can do it better. If you have difficulty telling the difference, then please feel free to ask people privately if they feel you are too over-the-top with it.

Sorry to be ranting. I tried to not do that in my previous post, I only wanted to point out that not all metas feel the same way about every issue confronting the colony, including supporting other metas. I did not mean to come across as if I was supporting random mayhem. I have shot another character -once- and only -once- but there was an IC reason for it, and it led to lots of RP opportunities later. Nell may be a meta, but she is still human.

First off, I haven't read all of this thread >.> cause it's long and I'm feeling lazy right now. But I'm going to reply based on what I think of the original topic.

I've never had any troubles with the childish seemingly school kid personalities that have popped up in game. (although there are a ton of you, perhaps be a little more creative?) I think everybody who these attitudes bother should be the ones we need to talk to. You're a character in a world, you've come across a problem (the growing amount of metas who clearly aren't fully developed mentally.) Fix it. I think in directly opposing the that type of character you'll get some RP you enjoy.

                          On Com Arguments:
I've said this probably a thousand times now. It happens IC, punish for it IC. IT's not worth complaining about ooc, lol.

I've had Vallon have -so- many com outburts, and yelling matches and arguments. And not -once- has any law enforcement person done more than ask me to stop. Well guess what.... thats good enough to stop my character. Toss him in a cell with the coms off until he agrees to stop? That might be good enough.

                          On Metas Fighting Metas:
-what- Those of you who think metas shouldn't fight metas are so far from wrong I can't even begin to comprehend it. Guess what folks? We're largely the only actual characters in the game. Just because the storyline says there is a large evil goverment doesn't mean it's actually in our face everyday to oppose with a clenched fist. So yea metas are going to fight metas, -always- At least my characters will.

And in ending... just have fun with your characters guys? And if someone is doing something fun for them that annoys you? I'm sure you'll find satisfaction in finding a way to stop them from doing it. Conflict and controversy are two of the most crucial parts to good RP.

Once a character screamed in Syren's ear. No reason, unprovoked. Just screamed. When I reacted as I should have (wondering why said person wasn't in Mendus) all other characters around acted like Syren should be in Mendus for getting upset the character screamed in her ear. -Every- time I oppose this kind of behavior (which I do often, I try to make it seem ridiculous) I get "shut up poopy head" or something equally juvenile.

How do I as an average character punish this. Do I write down every instance (which is utterly excessive nearly every time I log on which ends up causing me to sign off because it's annoying) in order to report it? What happens? They get put in a jail cell and continue to argue on com? They pay fines and continue to argue on com?

My basic plea here is as storytellers what story are we telling? To me its not a story I'd like to read -- which is fine I don't have to like all of it but it's gotten excessive.

                              Hrm

well I try not to be too eccentric....okay i lied. I try to be VERY different and off, for a few reasons, the most important being that I have a very normal ,boring real life (until this baby is born), and this game seems to be my home away from home. I figured the whole purpose of games like this is to be someone Im not, and to be whoever I wanna be (within game rules, of course ). I mean, if anyone has a problem with the way Blue is, please lemme know, and we can settle on something. I know she can be Rather annoying, and very insane, but that's because thats how -i- made her. I mean, how can you -not- love a girl who cheers someone on while they are pulling out eyeballs? lol. Anywho, come on guys, this is 'posed to be fun, BE FUN.
