Lazy? 'double-you' takes more effort than any other letter to say.

It probably started out as actually sticking two U's together. Though there's likely a more detailed and factual explaination out there somewhere.

My usual random daily thought, outside sex.
If you get one of those wire in-baskets, the ones your boss sticks work into, and file off the bar going across the top, you could solder some wires onto it and plug it into the mains. If you turned in the top of the prongs of the basket, incoming paper would have little holes burnt around its sides until it joined the pile of ashes from all the previously cremated paper. Maybe there should be a switch in case there's a particular sheet of paper you didn't want burned.

So... if you duct taped a piece of toast butter-side up on a cat's back, and dropped it off of a building.. just before hitting the ground it would stop, both forces pushing against eachother.. thus creating an eternally spinning cat/toast. Perpetual motion O,o
